King James wording
King James Version
Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite, the armourbearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah,THE KEY
The verse names the carrier beside the one whose work he supports, making the hidden support visible.
THE MEANING
This verse names Naharai through the equipment he carries for Joab. The bearer remains visible beside the person whose tools he carries; support has a person and a name. The same truth holds wherever one person’s work depends on what someone else carries.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that support work makes a person invisible gives way here: Naharai is named as the one carrying Joab’s equipment.
THE ROOT
נֹשֵׂא כְּלֵי
nōśēʾ kəlê
GROWS FROM
נשא
lift, carry, bear
“bearer of weapons” in this verse is nōśēʾ kəlê. The verb נשא keeps the movement of lifting and carrying in view: Naharai bears Joab’s equipment. Its branches also name a burden and one raised to leadership, showing how carrying and being upheld belong to the same field of meaning.
ALSO GROWS
maśśāʾ: A weight or charge that is carried.
מַשָּׂא
The bearer in this verse carries equipment; the related word for a burden makes the work of carrying itself visible.
nāśīʾ: A leader, traditionally linked to the idea of being lifted or raised.
נָשִׂיא
This branch places the bearer’s action beside the elevated role he serves: the one who carries and the one raised up are joined by the same root.
THE PATTERN
Visible work depends on people who carry what others need in order to act.
But Moses' hands were heavy. And they took a stone and set it under him, and he sat upon it. And Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on this side and the other on that side, and his hands were steady until the sun went down. And they came to him, bringing a paralyzed man, lifted by four.Carry one another's weights, and so you fill up the instruction of the Anointed One.THE THREAD
Even to old age I AM, and to gray hair I will bear you. I have made, and I will lift, I will bear, and I will slip you free.In “I will bear,” Isaiah uses the same Hebrew root, נשא, that describes Naharai as a bearer. The shared word opens the image beyond equipment: carrying can also name the way a life is held through every age.
