King James wording
King James Version
Now these are they that came to David to Ziklag, while he yet kept himself close because of Saul the son of Kish: and they were among the mighty men, helpers of the war.THE KEY
The verse places help inside confinement: David is still held back by Saul when allies arrive for the fight.
THE MEANING
When you are held close by opposition, constraint is not proof that you are abandoned: support can meet you while the conflict remains. David, the beloved, remains under Saul’s pressure as capable allies arrive beside him. The war stays real, and so does the help.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Being held back means you have been abandoned, and help can come only after the danger has passed.
THE ROOT
עֹזְרֵי
ʿōzrê
GROWS FROM
עזר
ʿ-z-r
To help, support, or come to someone’s aid.
“helpers” in this verse is ʿōzrê. The Hebrew names these men by the support they bring, not only by their status as warriors. This root also names help given by God, so the aid arriving here is not ornamental loyalty, it is strength entering the conflict.
ALSO GROWS
ʿāzar: To help or come to someone’s aid.
עָזַר
The verb presents help as an action: these men actively enter David’s struggle.
ʿēzer: Help, aid, or helper.
עֵזֶר
The same root names help itself, including the help described in Genesis 2:18 and Psalm 54:4.
THE PATTERN
Support becomes strength when it enters another person’s struggle.
For if they fall, the one raises up the one joined to him. But woe to the one who falls with no second to gird him.Embrace Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in the anointed one, Jesus. who placed their own necks beneath for my living soul, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the assemblies of the nations.THE THREAD
Look, God is my help; the Lord is with those who prop up my living soul. The word translated “helper” here comes from עזר (ʿ-z-r), the same root as the “helpers” who come to David. The root holds human aid and God’s help together: support can arrive through people who stand beside you.
