This verse in the King James

King James wording
Of the sons of Merari; Asaiah the chief, and his brethren two hundred and twenty:

The clan whose name echoes bitterness is counted as a whole community, so bitterness does not cancel belonging.

A life marked by bitterness can still have a place within a larger belonging; it is not reduced to that one name. Here a leader and 220 kin make the clan visible among the Levites.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

That bitterness disqualifies a person from belonging.

מְרָרִי

Merari

GROWS FROM

מרר

marar

To be bitter, or to make bitter.

Merari’s name carries an echo of bitterness, while the verse names a chief, kin, and a count. The bitter is not outside the gathering; it has a place within it without becoming the whole identity.

ALSO GROWS

mar: Bitter.

מַר

This adjective makes the root’s echo in Merari’s name clear: bitterness is present in the name, while the verse still gives the clan a place among its kin.

merorim: Bitter herbs.

מְרֹרִים

The word preserves bitterness as a distinct quality; here, too, the name’s echo does not erase the community counted in the verse.

A community takes shape through named members, assigned places, and shared responsibility.

Moreover, you shall look out from all the people for men of strength, who stand in awe of God, men of truth, who hate plunder; and set such over them as rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
Exodus 18:21 · SDVThe people are organized into groups with leaders placed over them.
And this is the watch of their load, according to all their serving in the tent of meeting; the frames of the dwelling, and its bars, and its pillars, and its sockets.
Numbers 4:31 · SDVA named group’s place in the community is made concrete through its particular share of responsibility.
But now God has set the limbs, each one of them, in the body, as he willed.
1 Corinthians 12:18 · SDVEach member has a place within the body, forming a whole through distinct parts.
And this is the watch of their load, according to all their serving in the tent of meeting; the frames of the dwelling, and its bars, and its pillars, and its sockets.
Numbers 4:31 · SDV

This verse opens the count into a defined share of work: the sons of Merari carry the tabernacle’s structural pieces. Their place in the community is tied to the supports that hold its dwelling together.
