This verse in the King James

King James wording
Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

Being surrounded does not make the next move for you: the verse turns from seeing both fronts to choosing and arranging a response.

When pressure comes from both sides, the whole arrangement can still be seen. The verse holds a clear sequence: the field is perceived, strength is selected, and a position is set to meet the threat. The danger remains real, yet it does not consume every possibility of response.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that pressure on every side leaves no choice at all; exposure and agency coexist in the same moment.

בְּחוּרֵי

bĕḥûrê

GROWS FROM

בחר

To choose, select, or distinguish.

“the chosen of Israel” in this verse is bĕḥûrê. The Hebrew calls them bĕḥûrê Israel: Israel’s young or choice men, with the word still carrying the root of choosing. Under pressure from two fronts, the response begins by selecting a portion of the people’s strength.

ALSO GROWS

bāḥūr: A young man; a choice or selected youth.

בָּחוּר

This is the form behind “choice of Israel,” making the selected contingent concrete rather than an abstract quality.

bāḥîr: A chosen one.

בָּחִיר

The same root can name someone by the act of being selected, echoing Joab’s choice of men for the exposed front.

וַיַּעֲרֹךְ

wayyaʿărōḵ

GROWS FROM

ערך

To arrange, set in order, or prepare.

“set them in rows” in this verse is wayyaʿărōḵ. The Hebrew verb carries the act of ordering into view: Joab does not only send men toward the Syrians, but gives selected strength a position. The danger is still present, while the force facing it takes shape as an ordered formation.

ALSO GROWS

maʿărāḵāh: An arrangement, battle line, or array.

מַעֲרָכָה

The noun for a battle formation grows from the same root as the act of putting the men in array.

ʿārakh: To arrange, set in order, or prepare.

עָרַךְ

This verb makes the movement from selected people to an intentional position visible.

Threat is met by seeing its scale and deliberately ordering the available strength.

For by steering you make your war, and in a multitude of counselors there is deliverance.
Proverbs 24:6 · SDVThe scale and counsel surrounding a conflict shape how strength is brought to bear.
And I stood the people in the lower places beneath the wall, and on the higher places, by their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
Nehemiah 4:13 · SDVPeople and resources are placed where the danger is most likely to meet them.
Or what king, going to clash with another king in war, does not first sit down and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet the one who comes against him with twenty thousand?
Luke 14:31 · SDVA king assesses the opposing force before deciding how to meet it.
And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones from the streambed, and put them in the shepherd's bag which he had, and in the pouch; and his sling was in his hand; and he drew near to the Philistine.
1 Samuel 17:40 · SDV

The word “chose” here is ⁨בָּחַר⁩ (bāḥar), the same root carried by “choice” in Joab’s selection of Israel’s men. One scene selects men, the other stones; in both, a deliberate choice turns what is already available into a response.
