King James wording
King James Version
And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.THE KEY
The Hebrew word for “help” carries the sense of deliverance, and either ally may become the one who brings the other out.
THE MEANING
Either side can be overpowered, and either person can need help. Here, help means stepping in as the other’s deliverance when the balance turns. Neither ally is fixed as the strong one or the rescuer.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that needing help makes you permanently weak, or that you must always be the one who rescues.
THE ROOT
לִישׁוּעָה
lishuʿah
GROWS FROM
ישע
Deliver, bring out into safety.
“my deliverance” in this verse is lishuʿah. Both forms translated “help” come from yasha, the root of deliverance. The verse describes aid as actively bringing someone out when their own strength is not enough, and makes that role reciprocal.
ALSO GROWS
yeshuah: Deliverance, rescue.
יְשׁוּעָה
The first ally offers to be the other’s deliverance if the opposing force overwhelms him.
moshia: Deliverer, one who brings another out.
מוֹשִׁיעַ
This names the role either ally may take when the other is overpowered.
hoshia: To deliver, rescue, or help.
הוֹשִׁיעַ
The second promise uses this verb: one person actively brings the other out.
תֶּחֱזַק
techezaq
GROWS FROM
חזק
Be strong, strengthen, or hold fast.
“grip harder than I” in this verse is techezaq. The verse treats strength as something that can be exceeded: an opponent can gain the upper hand over either ally. Beside yasha, this reveals help as what meets strength at its limit, not as a judgment on the person who has reached it.
ALSO GROWS
chazaq: Be strong, firm, or take hold.
חָזַק
This is the root verb behind the verse’s repeated condition of one force becoming too strong for the other.
chizzeq: Strengthen or make firm.
חִזֵּק
The related form shows that strength can be reinforced, while this verse shows the other kind of reinforcement: an ally’s deliverance.
hithchazzeq: Strengthen oneself or take courage.
הִתְחַזֵּק
This branch echoes the verse’s changing balance: strength may be found within oneself, or another may step in when that strength is surpassed.
THE PATTERN
When one person’s strength fails or reaches its limit, another can help carry the moment.
But Moses' hands were heavy. And they took a stone and set it under him, and he sat upon it. And Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on this side and the other on that side, and his hands were steady until the sun went down. For if they fall, the one raises up the one joined to him. But woe to the one who falls with no second to gird him.Carry one another's weights, and so you fill up the instruction of the Anointed One.THE THREAD
Look, God is my deliverance. I will lean my full weight and not tremble, for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song, and he has become my deliverance. The Hebrew word translated “salvation” here is yeshuah, from the same root as the words for “help” in 1 Chronicles. Isaiah speaks of deliverance as the ground of courage; Chronicles shows that deliverance arriving through one person’s promised aid to another.
