This verse in the King James

King James wording
Now these are their dwelling places throughout their castles in their coasts, of the sons of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites: for theirs was the lot.

The lot does more than assign land: it gives a people a place to settle and dwell.

A place to belong takes concrete form in dwellings within boundaries, joined to a people and their inheritance. The lot makes the share inhabitable: belonging becomes somewhere to settle.

מוֹשָׁב

moshav

GROWS FROM

ישב

To sit, remain, or dwell.

“settlements” in this verse is moshav. The word for a dwelling grows from the verb for sitting or settling. English can make these places sound like mere coordinates; the root holds the sense of a people coming to rest within their allotted ground.

ALSO GROWS

yashab: To sit, remain, or dwell.

יָשַׁב

The root verb makes dwelling an act of settling in a place, not simply having an address.

yoshev: One who sits or dwells; an inhabitant.

יֹשֵׁב

The same root can name the person by the place they inhabit, joining a people’s identity to their dwelling.

A received portion becomes real when it gives people boundaries within which to dwell.

Command the children of Israel to give the Levites cities to settle in from the inheritance of their holding, and you shall also give the Levites pasturelands for the cities round about them.
Numbers 35:2 · SDVThe Levites’ portion takes the form of actual cities where they can dwell.
The cords fall to me in sweet places; indeed, my inheritance is beautiful.
Psalm 16:6 · SDVBoundaries mark out a received share that can be called an inheritance.
And he made from one blood every nation of humankind to settle upon all the face of the earth, marking out their fitted seasons and setting the boundary stones of their dwelling.
Acts 17:26 · SDVHuman dwelling is described through both place and the boundaries that shape it.
And they spake unto them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, The LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to settle in, with their pastures for our cattle.
Joshua 21:2 · SDV

“To dwell” uses the same yashab root carried by moshav, “dwelling place.” The shared root joins the allotted cities to the settling that makes a place a home.
