King James wording
King James Version
Beriah also, and Shema, who were heads of the fathers of the inhabitants of Aijalon, who drove away the inhabitants of Gath:THE KEY
The Hebrew says these leaders made Gath’s inhabitants flee, placing forced flight beside inherited authority.
THE MEANING
This verse holds family authority and displacement in the same frame: these men are heads of families, and Gath’s inhabitants are made to flee the place where they dwell. The change in the land is recorded as a change in people’s lives, not just as a shift on a map.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the idea that a genealogy is only a neutral list of descent: this one records authority alongside the expulsion of a settled people.
THE ROOT
הִבְרִיחוּ
hibrichu
GROWS FROM
ברח
To flee or escape; in this verb form, to cause someone to flee.
“drove away” in this verse is hibrichu. The Hebrew makes the inhabitants’ flight explicit: these leaders cause them to flee. The root lets you see both sides of the same movement, fleeing and making others flee.
ALSO GROWS
barach: The basic verb for fleeing.
בָּרַח
It names the movement that the leaders cause in this verse.
vayyivrach: A form of the same verb describing one person fleeing.
וַיִּבְרַח
Exodus 2:15 uses this form for Moses fleeing Pharaoh; here the causative form makes Gath’s inhabitants the ones driven to flight.
יֹשְׁבֵי
yoshvei
GROWS FROM
ישב
To sit, remain, or dwell.
“the settlers of Aijalon” in this verse is yoshvei. The inhabitants are literally the people dwelling in Gath. Beside the root for flight, this creates a sharp movement from settled residence to being made to flee.
ALSO GROWS
yashav: To sit or take up residence.
יָשַׁב
It shows the settled state that the verse’s forced flight overturns.
moshav: A place of residence or a seat.
מוֹשָׁב
The same root links dwelling to having a place; the verse records that place being lost.
שֶׁמַע
Shema
GROWS FROM
שמע
To hear or listen; the name carries the sense of hearing.
Shema’s name carries the root of hearing within a list otherwise organized by fathers, settlement, and flight. It keeps an individual name present in a record of collective displacement.
ALSO GROWS
shema: A command to hear or listen.
שְׁמַע
Deuteronomy 6:4 uses this form, showing the root in its direct call to hear.
shemuah: A report or news that has been heard.
שְׁמוּעָה
The branch shows how the root can name both hearing and what is carried through hearing.
THE PATTERN
Land changes hands through the movement of people: some are made to leave the places where they dwell.
So he drove out the man, and he pitched the cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and the flaming sword that turned every way would guard the way of the tree of life. When the LORD your God brings you into the land where you go to take hold of it, and drives out many nations before you, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you.Which also our fathers, having brought it in, took hold of in turn with Jesus, into the holding of the nations, whom God thrust out before the face of our fathers, until the days of David.THE THREAD
Now when Pharaoh heard this word, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and settled in the land of Midian, and sat down by the well.Exodus uses וַיִּבְרַח (vayyivrach, “and he fled”), from the same root ברח (barach, “flee”) as the verb translated “drove away” here. The shared root makes the change in agency visible: Moses flees there, while Gath’s inhabitants are made to flee here.
