This verse in the King James

King James wording
So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

You wait for Christ’s unveiling with favor-gifts already present; waiting is not emptiness.

You await the revealing of Jesus while no favor-gift is missing from your life together. The waiting is not a vacant interval: what is given now already belongs to the life oriented toward his unveiling.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that you must wait for Christ to be revealed before you have what you need.

χάρισμα

charisma

GROWS FROM

χάρις

charis

favor; gracious regard freely extended

A charisma is favor taking the form of a gift. The same word-family links what is received with the grateful response it awakens, so the verse presents the community’s abundance as favor received and recognized.

ALSO GROWS

charizomai: to grant freely; show favor

χαρίζομαι

This branch shows favor in action: the gift is favor extended, not merely an item possessed.

eucharistia: thanksgiving; gratitude

εὐχαριστία

The same charis family names the response to received favor, linking gift and gratitude.

ἀποκάλυψις

apokalypsis

GROWS FROM

καλύπτω

kalyptō

to cover or conceal

The KJV’s “coming” is apokalypsis, an uncovering: what is hidden becomes visible. The waiting in this verse faces an unveiling, while the gifts named just before it are already present.

ALSO GROWS

kalyptō: to cover; conceal

καλύπτω

This is the covered state carried in the root beneath the word for revelation.

apokalyptō: to uncover; reveal

ἀποκαλύπτω

The uncovering word shows what the awaited apokalypsis brings into view.

kalymma: a covering; veil

κάλυμμα

The veil belongs to the same word-family, making revelation the removal of what obscures.

Waiting for what is to be revealed can coexist with gifts already present for life now.

But the showing of the breath is given to each one, for what carries us together.
1 Corinthians 12:7 · SDVThe gift is already given and serves the shared good while the community continues its life of trust.
And not only the creation, but we ourselves also, who hold the firstfruits of the breath, groan within ourselves, waiting for our placing as sons, the release of our body.
Romans 8:23 · SDVFirstfruits are present even as you wait for the fullness still to come.
Therefore bind up the hips of your thinking, stay sober, and hope to the end for the favor being carried to you at the unveiling of Jesus the Anointed One.
1 Peter 1:13 · SDVFavor is already the horizon of your waiting for Jesus to be revealed.
But we all, with uncovered faces, mirror the weight of the LORD, and are being reshaped into the same image, ever increasing in weight, even as from the breath of the LORD.
2 Corinthians 3:18 · SDV

The “open face” is an unveiled face, formed from the same Greek word-family as apokalypsis, the unveiling awaited here. The connection makes that revealing continuous with present sight: you already behold the Lord’s weight with an uncovered face.
