King James wording
King James Version
And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?THE KEY
The ear’s difference from the eye cannot make it an outsider, because the body includes parts that cannot replace one another.
THE MEANING
When you conclude that you do not belong because you are unlike the person or role you notice, this verse turns that conclusion into a question. The ear cannot be the eye, yet it is of the body; belonging does not require sameness. The whole includes distinct parts with distinct work.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that belonging depends on resembling the part you think matters most. Difference alone does not prove exclusion.
THE ROOT
σῶμα
sōma
GROWS FROM
σωματ-
Body; an embodied whole.
The Greek phrase for “of the body” is ἐκ τοῦ σώματος (ek tou sōmatos), “out from the body”: the ear imagines that being unlike the eye puts it outside the whole. The same word family names shared membership as σύσσωμος (sýssōmos), “sharing the same body,” holding difference and belonging together.
ALSO GROWS
sýssōmos: Sharing the same body; a fellow member.
σύσσωμος
This word appears in the language of shared membership: belonging to the body does not require being the same kind of member.
sōmatikós: Bodily; pertaining to the body.
σωματικός
This branch keeps the image concrete: the body is a whole with distinct embodied parts, not a demand that every part perform the same role.
THE PATTERN
A living whole includes distinct parts whose differences do not cancel their belonging.
Your eyes see my unshaped mass. In your book every one of the days is inscribed as it is shaped, before any of them is.I am the vine, and you are the branches. The one who remains in me, and I in him, this one bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. For just as we have many limbs in one body, and not all the limbs have the same deed. So we, though many, are one body in the Anointed One, and each of us is a limb of one another.THE THREAD
But now God has set the limbs, each one of them, in the body, as he willed. The same word, σῶμα (sōma), “body,” appears again, and this verse names the placement of each member within it. The ear’s difference from the eye does not decide whether it belongs; distinct members are already part of the body.
