This verse in the King James

King James wording
If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

A whole body is not one sense perfected; it is distinct senses together making one field of perception.

You are not made whole by asking one capacity to do every kind of perceiving. Sight, hearing, and smell each disclose what the others cannot, and their difference is part of the body’s shared life. The verse speaks now wherever sameness is mistaken for wholeness.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that unity means every part must do the same thing. A body made only of eyes would lose hearing and smell, not become more complete.

ὅλον

holon

GROWS FROM

ὅλος

holos

whole, entire

The Greek family of “whole” includes words for being complete in every part. Here, wholeness does not mean that every part does the same thing; it means the body’s different capacities belong together.

ALSO GROWS

holoklēros: Entire, sound in every part

ὁλόκληρος

This branch makes the body’s completeness compatible with its different senses.

holotelēs: Complete through and through

ὁλοτελής

It echoes the verse’s picture of a whole that depends on more than one capacity.

ἀκοή

akoē

GROWS FROM

ἀκούω

akouō

hear, listen

The Greek family links hearing with both the act of listening and the response of heeding. In this verse, hearing stands as its own way of receiving; sight cannot take its place.

ALSO GROWS

akouō: To hear, listen, or give ear

ἀκούω

This is the verb behind the sense named in the verse: hearing is a distinct act of receiving.

hypakoē: Heeding or obedience

ὑπακοή

This related word carries hearing toward response, showing how reception can lead beyond mere perception.

A living whole works through distinct capacities that serve a shared life.

But now God has set the limbs, each one of them, in the body, as he willed.
1 Corinthians 12:18 · SDVThe body’s different members belong within one whole, each with its own place.
For just as we have many limbs in one body, and not all the limbs have the same deed.
Romans 12:4 · SDVOne body’s many members have different functions rather than one repeated function.
As each has received a gift, serve it to one another as good stewards of the many-colored favor of God.
1 Peter 4:10 · SDVDifferent gifts contribute to the life shared among many.
So then trust comes out of hearing, and hearing comes through the word of God.
Romans 10:17 · SDV

Romans 10:17 uses the same Greek word, ⁨ἀκοή⁩ (akoē, hearing), for the way a message is received. That shared root opens this verse’s hearing as a distinct channel of reception, one the eye cannot replace.
