King James wording
King James Version
It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:THE KEY
The body’s present weakness and dishonour describe what is sown, not what is finally raised.
THE MEANING
Your embodied life is not measured only by its present frailty or how it is regarded now. This verse holds one body through both acts: it is sown in dishonour and weakness, and raised in weight and power. The verb for “raised” also carries the sense of rousing or waking, so resurrection is a changed condition of embodied life.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that bodily weakness or dishonour is the body’s final measure.
THE ROOT
ἐγείρεται
egeiretai
GROWS FROM
ἐγειρ-
egeir-
To rouse or awaken; by extension, to raise up. The form here means “is raised.”
“awakened” in this verse is egeiretai. This verb can describe waking as well as raising, so resurrection is presented as an awakening into a changed condition. The same body is sown and raised; weakness and dishonour describe its seed condition, not its final one.
ALSO GROWS
egeirō: The base verb covers waking and raising.
ἐγείρω
It opens the sense of “raised” to include awakening.
synegeirō: The same verb with syn- (“together”) means to raise together.
συνεγείρω
It keeps the image of raising while adding the idea of being raised with others.
δυνάμει
dynamei
GROWS FROM
δυναμ-
dynam-
Capacity, ability, power: what something is able to do.
“strength” in this verse is dynamei. Power here is not only force; δύναμις also names capacity. Raised in power describes a body whose capacity has changed, not simply one put in motion.
ALSO GROWS
dynamai: To be capable or able.
δύναμαι
It shows the ability contained in the same word family as “power.”
dynatos: Capable, strong, or powerful.
δυνατός
It links power with the capacity to act.
δόξῃ
doxēi
GROWS FROM
δοξ-
dox-
The family carries honor and reputation; here, “glory” is understood as weight.
The sense of weight brings out more than brightness: the raised body bears a different weight of honor and presence. Beside power, it names both what the body bears and what it can do.
ALSO GROWS
doxazō: To honor or give glory.
δοξάζω
It carries the same family of honor into an action.
endoxos: Held in honor or glorious.
ἔνδοξος
It shows how the family describes a person or thing bearing honor.
THE PATTERN
Weakness is a present condition that divine power can meet and transform, not a final measure.
He gives power to the faint, and to those without might he multiplies strength. And he said to me, "My favor is enough for you, for strength is carried to its end in weakness." Most gladly, then, I will boast all the more in my weaknesses, so that the strength of the Anointed One may pitch its tent over me.Who will reshape the body of our lowness, that it may become shaped together with the body of his weight, according to the working by which he is able even to set all things under himself.THE THREAD
So also is the rising of the dead. It is sown in decay; it is awakened in what does not decay. The same Greek verb ἐγείρεται (egeiretai, “is raised”) appears in both verses. Verse 42 names corruption becoming incorruption; this verse adds dishonour becoming glory and weakness becoming power, holding one body’s transformation across each pair.
