King James wording
King James Version
For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.THE KEY
The mind no one can give to God as instruction is the mind Christ shares with us.
THE MEANING
No human being stands above the Lord to teach him what is true. Yet the verse says, “we have the mind of Christ”: the wisdom beyond your mastery is made shareable in Christ. Your understanding is not sealed off from this way of seeing.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that God’s wisdom is wholly inaccessible: the verse that says no one can instruct the Lord also says we have the mind of Christ.
THE ROOT
νοῦς
nous
GROWS FROM
νο-
no-
Perceive, apprehend; mind or understanding as the capacity to perceive.
English “mind” can sound like a private store of thoughts, but νοῦς (nous) means mind or understanding as a faculty of perception. The verse moves from the impossibility of tutoring the Lord to the startling claim that Christ’s way of perceiving is shared.
ALSO GROWS
noeō: Perceive, understand
νοέω
This verb shows the mind as an act of apprehending, not merely possessing information.
dianoia: Understanding, thought
διάνοια
This related form carries the same perceptual seed into the broader sense of understanding.
THE PATTERN
God’s understanding cannot be supplied by human counsel, yet divine knowing is made shareable through the Breath and the Son.
Who marks out the breath of the LORD, or, as his counselor, makes him know? But God unveiled them to us through his breath, for the breath searches all things, even the depths of God.All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son chooses to uncover him.THE THREAD
For who has known the mind of the LORD? Or who has stood beside him as his counselor?Romans repeats the same question with the same word translated “mind,” so the connection is verbal, not merely thematic. Beside its answer here, the question turns: no one can counsel the Lord, yet Christ’s mind is shared with “we.”
