King James wording
King James Version
And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.THE KEY
The same raising word-family that names the Lord’s completed resurrection also names the raising God promises for you.
THE MEANING
The God who has raised the Lord is also the one who will raise you by his own power. Your body is included in that future; death does not have the final word over embodied life.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The body is disposable, and death has the final claim over it.
THE ROOT
ἤγειρεν
ēgeiren exegerei
GROWS FROM
ἐγείρω
egeirō
To wake, rouse, or raise.
“raised” in this verse is ēgeiren exegerei. The Greek uses forms from ἐγείρω (egeirō, to wake or raise) for the Lord’s completed raising and the raising promised for us. The future form adds ἐκ (ek, out), while keeping the shared raising stem that joins the two.
ALSO GROWS
egersis: Rising; resurrection.
ἔγερσις
Matthew 27:53 uses this related noun for Jesus’ resurrection, showing the same word-family in the name of the rising itself.
ēgerthē: He was raised; he is risen.
ἠγέρθη
The word used in Matthew 28:6 belongs to the same family and names the raising as an accomplished act.
THE PATTERN
God’s life-giving power raises people from the grave and carries embodied life beyond death.
O LORD, you brought up my living soul from Sheol. You kept me alive from those who go down into the pit.For just as the Father raises the dead and makes them alive, so the Son makes alive whomever he wills. But if the breath of him who raised Jesus from the dead makes its home in you, then he who raised the Anointed One from the dead will also make your death-bound bodies alive through his breath that makes its home in you.THE THREAD
Knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also through Jesus, and will stand us beside you. This verse repeats the same movement: the Lord is raised, and we are raised too. The shared raising word-family makes the promise one continuous act of God, reaching from Jesus to us.
