King James wording
King James Version
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?THE KEY
The word rendered “Holy Ghost” is pneuma, breath, and your body itself is named as God’s sanctuary.
THE MEANING
Your body is the sanctuary where God’s breath dwells, so your embodied life belongs in relationship to the One from whom it comes. This indwelling is present now: what is God’s is already within you.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is that the body is spiritually insignificant or belongs to an isolated self, separate from God.
THE ROOT
πνεῦμα
pneuma
GROWS FROM
πνευ-
pneu-
Breath or wind; moving air, also rendered “Spirit” in divine contexts.
“Set-Apart Breath” in this verse is pneuma. The KJV’s “Holy Ghost” carries a bodily layer too: πνεῦμα (pneuma) means breath and wind as well as spirit. The same word names what is within you while the verse names your body as God’s sanctuary.
ALSO GROWS
pneō: to breathe, blow
πνέω
This verb shares the breath-and-wind sense of pneuma, making the verse’s indwelling presence bodily and active.
pnoē: breath, blast
πνοή
This related noun makes audible the breath shared by the word-family that the verse uses for God’s presence within you.
THE PATTERN
God’s life dwells within embodied human life, making the body itself a place of divine presence.
And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul. And I will set my breath in you, and you shall live, and I will set you down upon your own ground. Then you shall perceive that I the LORD have spoken it and done it, says the LORD.Have you not seen that you are God's temple, and that the breath of God dwells in you?THE THREAD
The breath blows where it wills, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so is everyone who is born of breath.John 3:8 uses πνεῦμα (pneuma) for both the wind that blows and the Spirit from whom one is born; here the same word names what dwells within the body. English separates those renderings, while the Greek keeps the breath, wind, and Spirit connection together.
