King James wording
King James Version
For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.THE KEY
The stewardship can be entrusted before the will consents to carry it.
THE MEANING
Willing service carries a reward, while reluctant service can still be a stewardship entrusted to someone’s hands. The responsibility remains real even when the will does not welcome it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Reluctance does not, by itself, prove that a responsibility is unreal or unentrusted.
THE ROOT
πεπίστευμαι
pepisteumai
GROWS FROM
πιστ-
pist-
Trust, reliance; to trust or entrust.
“has been entrusted to me” in this verse is pepisteumai. The Greek form means “I have been entrusted”: the trust has been placed in someone’s care, and its result remains. Its word family includes trust and what is trustworthy, so “committed” carries the sense of something another has leaned on you to hold.
ALSO GROWS
pistis: Trust, reliance
πίστις
It names the trust at the heart of being entrusted with the gospel.
pistos: Trustworthy, firm
πιστός
It describes the quality expected of someone who holds what has been placed in their care.
pisteuō: Trust, entrust
πιστεύω
It is the verb family behind the verse’s “committed,” joining reliance with the act of placing something in another’s care.
THE PATTERN
A stewardship is defined by what has been placed in someone’s care, even when it was not self-originated.
And Joseph found favor in his eyes, and he served him; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he placed into his hand. And the Lord said, "Who then is the steady and wise steward whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their measure of grain in due season?"As each has received a gift, serve it to one another as good stewards of the many-colored favor of God.THE THREAD
But on the opposite side, when they perceived that I had been entrusted with the good news of the uncircumcision, just as Peter had been entrusted with the good news of the circumcision. The same Greek verb translated “committed” appears here, so the stewardship in 1 Corinthians is a trust in the word itself, not only an assignment. Galatians makes the entrusted content explicit: the gospel.
