This verse in the King James

King James wording
I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

Effort becomes progress through direction: a runner needs a course, and a boxer needs a target.

This verse names a difference you meet now: movement can spend your strength without taking you anywhere when it has no clear aim. When effort has a direction, it moves toward something rather than becoming motion alone.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that trying harder is enough; effort can be real and still miss its mark.

ἀδήλως

adēlōs

GROWS FROM

⁨δῆλος⁩ (dēlos) with privative ⁨α-⁩

Clear, evident, manifest; the added ⁨α-⁩ negates that clarity.

“without sight” in this verse is adēlōs. The Greek points beyond anxious doubt to movement without a distinct aim. Set beside the boxer striking air, it shows that effort alone does not make movement purposeful: force needs somewhere to go.

ALSO GROWS

dēlos: Clear, evident, manifest.

δῆλος

Its positive sense reveals what adēlōs lacks: a visible or definite direction.

dēloō: Make clear, show, indicate.

δηλόω

This related verb links clarity with something identifiable, echoing the verse’s contrast between aimed movement and motion without a target.

Purposeful movement follows a defined way; without a course, effort becomes aimless.

Let your eyes gaze ahead, and let your eyelids be straight before you.
Proverbs 4:25 · SDVThe straight-ahead gaze gives movement a clear direction.
I run the way of your commands, when you widen my heart.
Psalm 119:32 · SDVRunning follows a way, and the enlarged heart makes room for that movement.
Therefore, since we also have so great a cloud of witnesses lying around us, setting down every weight and falling short that so easily wraps around us, let us run the race lying before us, remaining under it.
Hebrews 12:1 · SDVThe race is set before the runner, giving the effort a defined course.
Therefore, since we also have so great a cloud of witnesses lying around us, setting down every weight and falling short that so easily wraps around us, let us run the race lying before us, remaining under it.
Hebrews 12:1 · SDV

Both verses use ⁨τρέχω⁩ (trechō, run). Hebrews names the movement as a race with a course set before the runner, bringing into view the clear aim implied by “not as uncertainly.”
