This verse in the King James

King James wording
Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

“Abide,” “remain,” and “continue” are forms of one Greek verb: what you heard remains in you as you remain in the Son and the Father.

What you have heard from the beginning remains within you, and your life continues in the Son and the Father. The verse describes this relationship as a shared dwelling: the heard word within you, and you remaining in them.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that your place with the Father depends on finding a newer message; the verse locates that continuity in what you have already heard and what remains within you.

μένω

menō

GROWS FROM

⁨μεν-⁩ (men-, the stem of ⁨μένω⁩)

To stay, remain, or continue.

The KJV uses three English verbs for forms of the same Greek verb, ⁨μένω⁩ (menō), meaning “remain” or “stay.” That shared root makes the verse one continuous movement: what you heard remains in you, and you remain in the Son and the Father.

ALSO GROWS

monē: A place to stay or dwell.

μονή

“Abode” in John 14:23 comes from the same word family, linking what remains within you with the Father and Son making their dwelling with you.

diamenō: To remain or continue through.

διαμένω

This compound carries the same root of remaining, illuminating “continue” as sustained dwelling.

What is heard and received becomes an inner dwelling from which life with God continues.

He who settles in the hiding place of the Most High lodges in the shadow of the Almighty.
Psalm 91:1 · SDVThe one who dwells with the Most High also abides under the Almighty’s shelter; dwelling and sheltering presence belong together.
Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it stays in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.
John 15:4 · SDVThe branch bears fruit by remaining in the vine, making life an expression of continued connection.
Hold to the imprint of whole words which you have heard from me, in trust and love, which is in Jesus the Anointed One.
2 Timothy 1:13 · SDVWords heard are held in faith and love within Christ, showing how what is received can remain as a lasting guide for life.
Jesus answered and said to him, If anyone loves me, that one will guard my word, and my Father will love that one, and we will come to him and make a place to remain with him.
John 14:23 · SDV

“Abode” translates ⁨μονή⁩ (monē), from the same ⁨μένω⁩ (menō) word family as the forms rendered “abide,” “remain,” and “continue” here. The shared root links the word remaining in you with the Father and Son making their dwelling with you.
