What Does 1 John 2:27 Mean?
But the anointing you have received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. As the same anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is no lie, you will remain in him, even as it has taught you.

King James wording
King James Version
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.THE KEY
The same word for “remain” moves in both directions: the anointing remains in you as you remain in him.
THE MEANING
The anointing you received from him remains within you and teaches you concerning all things; it is true and without falsehood. Its abiding in you and your abiding in him are joined in one continuing relationship.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The assumption that you are empty of discernment until another person supplies it dissolves: the anointing that remains within you is itself teaching.
THE ROOT
μένει
ménei
GROWS FROM
μένω (menō), with the related stem μεν-/μον-
Remain, stay, continue.
“remains” in this verse is ménei. English repeats “abide,” but the same Greek verb links the anointing remaining in you with your remaining in him. The word joins inward presence and continuing relationship.
ALSO GROWS
monē: Dwelling place, abode.
μονή
This related word names a place to remain; John 14:23 uses it for the Father and Son making their abode with a person.
hypomonē: Endurance, steadfast remaining.
ὑπομονή
This branch carries the same idea of remaining through difficulty, showing that the root describes sustained presence, not a passing touch.
χρῖσμα
chrisma
GROWS FROM
χρίω (chriō), stem χρι-
Anoint, apply oil.
The word for anointing and the title “the Anointed One” grow from the same Greek root. The anointing received from him carries that shared word-family into the reader, where it remains and teaches.
ALSO GROWS
christos: Anointed one.
χριστός
This is the same root family as “anointing”; the verse’s inner anointing is linguistically linked to the Anointed One.
chriō: To anoint, apply oil.
χρίω
The verb names the action from which χρῖσμα (chrisma, anointing) is formed, tying the received gift to the act of anointing.
THE PATTERN
What is received within becomes a continuing source of instruction and recognition.
I delight to do what pleases you, O my God, and your instruction is within my inward parts. But the One who comes alongside, the Set-Apart Breath, which the Father will send in my nature, that one will teach you all things and will remind you of all that I said to you.But you have an anointing from the Set-Apart One, and you know all things.THE THREAD
Jesus answered and said to him, If anyone loves me, that one will guard my word, and my Father will love that one, and we will come to him and make a place to remain with him.“Abode” is μονή (monē, dwelling place), a word from the same family as μένω (menō, remain). The shared root makes the inward anointing and abiding in him read as mutual dwelling: what remains in you and where you remain are joined.
