What Does 1 John 4:5 Mean?
They come out of the world; for this reason they speak out of the world, and the world hears them.
Key words are shown with the Hebrew or Greek and what each word meant.
Selah Decoded Version The Selah Decoded Version renders what the Hebrew and Greek words meant to the people who first heard them.
King James wording
King James Version
They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.THE KEY
The world does not merely hear a message; it recognizes its own order speaking.
THE MEANING
A voice speaks from the order it belongs to, and that order recognizes its own. Hearing here is reception, a kind of kinship between speaker and hearer. The reader’s responses can disclose which order feels familiar.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It loosens the assumption that being widely heard proves a voice is true. A message can be welcomed because it speaks the hearers’ own order back to them.
THE ROOT
κόσμος
kosmos
GROWS FROM
κοσμ-
kosm-
Order, arrangement; also adornment.
“They come out of the world” in this verse is kosmos. The Greek repeats κόσμος three times: they are from this world, speak from it, and are heard by it. The word’s wider sense of order or arrangement lets the verse show a shared sphere of belonging, speech, and recognition beneath the English word “world.”
ALSO GROWS
kosmeō: To arrange, adorn.
κοσμέω
This branch makes the root’s sense of putting things in order visible.
kosmios: Orderly, well-arranged, decorous.
κόσμιος
This branch describes what accords with an established order, illuminating how a voice can feel familiar to those formed within it.
THE PATTERN
Reception follows affinity: a hearer readily receives speech that belongs to the order shaping their life.
Who say to the seers, "Do not see," and to the visionaries, "Do not see for us what is straight. Speak to us what is smooth, see what is slippery."Whoever is from God hears the words of God. You therefore do not hear them, because you are not from God.But the man of the living soul does not take in the things of the breath of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot know them, because they are sifted through the breath.THE THREAD
If you were out of the world, it would love its own. But because you are not out of it, but I picked you out of it, therefore the world hates you.The same Greek word, κόσμος (kosmos), names both the source and the sphere that receives or rejects. Here, “the world” loves its own; the shared root makes the recognition in 1 John 4:5 part of the same pattern of belonging.
