This verse in the King James

King James wording
And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)

You can flee the hand that constrains you and still find yourself dwelling inside the constriction.

You can be beyond the reach of the authority you fled while still living inside the narrowness that remains. Then a report reaches you there: what you hear can reopen movement before the constriction itself has ended.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that escaping the person who constrained you means the constriction is over; flight can change who is near while the narrow place remains.

מִצְרַיִם

Mitzrayim

GROWS FROM

צָרַר

tsarar

To bind, press in, or constrict.

Egypt’s name carries the shape of narrowness, with its ending framing that constriction as doubled. The verse repeats that Jeroboam is still there: flight has moved him from Solomon, but his dwelling has not yet opened into spaciousness.

ALSO GROWS

tsar: Narrow or pressing; also an adversary.

צַר

The same word-shape holds both the constricted condition and what presses against a person.

metzar: A tight place, strait, or distress.

מֵצַר

This branch makes Egypt’s constriction concrete as a place one can inhabit.

וַיִּשְׁמַע

vayyishmaʿ

GROWS FROM

שָׁמַע

shamaʿ

To hear, listen, or heed.

“heard” in this verse is vayyishmaʿ. English can make hearing sound like passive reception, but this root links listening with response and with the report itself. The news lands inside Jeroboam’s continued dwelling and becomes a hinge toward what happens next.

ALSO GROWS

shemaʿ: Hear with an answering response.

שְׁמַע

The word’s wider range lets hearing carry the possibility of movement, not just the arrival of information.

shemuʿah: A report; something heard.

שְׁמוּעָה

The event reaches Jeroboam as a report, making what was distant present to him.

וַיֵּשֶׁב

vayyēshev

GROWS FROM

יָשַׁב

yashav

To sit, remain, settle, or dwell.

“settled” in this verse is vayyēshev. The verse holds flight beside settling: Jeroboam has fled Solomon, yet his life is still seated in Egypt. The repeated location keeps the escape from sounding like a completed passage out of constriction.

ALSO GROWS

yōshēv: One who sits or dwells in a place.

יֹשֵׁב

The branch turns dwelling into a description of where a person remains.

mōshav: A dwelling, seat, or settlement.

מוֹשָׁב

The word family gives “dwelt” the sense of taking up a place, not merely passing through it.

A report heard while life is still constrained can become the hinge that reopens movement.

And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy for us from there, that we may live and not die.
Genesis 42:2 · SDVHearing news of grain while scarcity presses the family turns Egypt into the next step.
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak, for your servant hears and responds.
1 Samuel 3:10 · SDVSamuel’s hearing opens directly into a spoken response, making listening a turning point.
Truly, truly, I say to you, The hour is coming, and now it is, when the dead will hear and respond to the voice of the Son of God, and those who respond will live.
John 5:25 · SDVThe voice reaches even those named dead, and hearing becomes the passage into life.
From the narrow place I call out to the LORD, and the LORD answers me in a wide place.
Psalm 118:5 · SDV

The Hebrew ⁨מֵצַר⁩ (metzar, narrow place or distress) echoes the constriction carried in Egypt’s name here. This verse names the movement the passage has not yet reached: from being hemmed in to being set in a large place.
