King James wording
King James Version
So Omri slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria: and Ahab his son reigned in his stead.THE KEY
Death buries the ruler; it does not bury the rule, which passes into another person.
THE MEANING
A life ends, and the authority it carried continues through another person. You meet both facts in one line: Omri is buried, while Ahab takes the place of rule. The person is gone; the seat remains.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that a leader’s death ends the order he carried: Omri is buried, but the reign passes to Ahab.
THE ROOT
וַיִּמְלֹךְ
wayyimlokh
GROWS FROM
מלך
m-l-k
to rule or reign
“reigned” in this verse is wayyimlokh. The Hebrew verb belongs to the same root family as the words for king and kingdom. English gives the action, the ruler, and the realm separate words; the root connects them, showing how rule can continue even as the person holding it changes.
ALSO GROWS
melekh: A king or ruler
מֶלֶךְ
Ahab becomes the person who occupies the continuing place of rule.
mamlakhah: A kingdom or realm
מַמְלָכָה
The realm persists as authority passes from Omri to Ahab.
malkhut: Kingship or royal rule
מַלְכוּת
The office of ruling outlasts the ruler named in the verse.
THE PATTERN
An office can outlast its current holder and pass to another person.
And you shall place some of your weight upon him, so that all the assembly of the children of Israel may hear and respond.Moses, my servant, is dead. So now rise, cross over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the children of Israel. And they cast their lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was counted with the eleven sent ones.THE THREAD
And the LORD said to Samuel, Hear and respond to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not spurned you, but they have spurned me, that I should not reign over them. The same Hebrew root מלך (malakh, “to reign”) describes Ahab taking the throne and God’s rule. This verse opens the succession further by placing human kingship beside the question of whose rule it carries forward.
