King James wording
King James Version
And his servant Zimri, captain of half his chariots, conspired against him, as he was in Tirzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza steward of his house in Tirzah.THE KEY
The Hebrew behind “conspired” means “bound together”: the threat is a bond forming while the king is too drunk to perceive it.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks now of danger forming inside places and relationships that seem secure: the king is drinking in a house while a servant binds a plot against him. Rank and familiar surroundings cannot make someone see what is gathering beyond their awareness.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a high position and a familiar setting guarantee safety; the threat can form within the very structure a person relies on.
THE ROOT
וַיִּקְשֹׁר
vayyiqshor
GROWS FROM
קשר
to bind, tie, or join together
“bound together against him” in this verse is vayyiqshor. English presents “conspired” as an intention; the root also carries the sense of binding. The related noun for conspiracy names a bond or compact, so the danger here is a plot taking shape as a binding against the king.
ALSO GROWS
qēšer: conspiracy, plot, or compact
קֶשֶׁר
This noun makes the shared bond inside a conspiracy visible: it is a joining of people or plans against someone.
ūqĕshartām: “and you shall bind them”
וּקְשַׁרְתָּם
In Deuteronomy 6:8, the same root describes binding instruction as a sign on the hand. The root can describe different kinds of bonds; what is bound and why reveals their purpose.
THE PATTERN
A plot becomes active when private counsel binds people into shared action against an exposed person.
And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counselor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he slaughtered sacrifices. And the bond took hold, for the people kept walking and growing with Absalom. And consulted that they might seize Jesus by deceit, and kill him. When day came, certain of the Jews twisted themselves together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had lifted Paul out of the way.THE THREAD
And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.“Conspired” comes from qashar, קשר, meaning to bind or tie; Deuteronomy uses the same root for binding instruction to hand and sight. The shared root shows binding itself is not the whole story: what the bond serves determines its meaning.
