This verse in the King James

King James wording
So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

Ahab’s shalach (“sent”) begins a gathering, but being gathered together does not yet mean sharing one allegiance.

Ahab (⁨אַחְאָב⁩, Aḥʾāv, “father’s brother”) sends the summons at Carmel (⁨כַּרְמֶל⁩, Karmel, “fruitful gardenland”). Now, a summons can draw people into one place before they share allegiance; assembly is the beginning of exposure, not proof of unity.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Being gathered together means we already agree.

וַיִּשְׁלַח

wayyishlach

GROWS FROM

שׁלח

To send forth or dispatch; in other uses, to release or let go.

English gives “sent” a simple direction, but ⁨שׁלח⁩ also carries the possibility of release. The same root can describe a command sent outward or someone being let go, so the summons holds both authority and release within its range.

ALSO GROWS

shaliach: Messenger; one who is sent.

שָׁלִיחַ

A messenger is defined by being sent out, making Ahab’s action part of the same family of dispatch.

Shiloach: Sent forth; the name of a waterway or pool.

שִׁלֹחַ

This branch connects sending with waters associated with restored sight, extending the root beyond political command.

shilluach: Sending away or dismissal.

שִׁלּוּחַ

This branch makes the root’s releasing sense explicit beside Ahab’s summons.

וַיִּקְבֹּץ

wayyiqbotz

GROWS FROM

קבץ

To gather or collect into one place.

“gathered together” in this verse is wayyiqbotz. The Hebrew gives two distinct movements: ⁨שׁלח⁩ sends outward, while ⁨קבץ⁩ collects together. A people can be brought into one place before the text reveals what, if anything, unites them.

ALSO GROWS

qibbēts: He gathered or collected.

קִבֵּץ

This verb form names the action Ahab performs: bringing separate people into an assembly.

qevutsah: Group or collection.

קְבוּצָה

This related noun shows how gathering produces a group, while leaving open whether that group shares allegiance.

A summons can collect people into one assembly, while the nature of the call shapes what they face together.

And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and they took their stand before God.
Joshua 24:1 · SDVThe gathering brings Israel together to face a shared covenant choice.
Gather to me my faithful ones, those who cut my covenant over the slaughtered offering.
Psalm 50:5 · SDVThe summons gathers people whose covenant already gives the assembly its shared bond.
For where two or three are gathered together in my nature, there I am in the midst of them.
Matthew 18:20 · SDVThose gathered in his nature share the promise of his presence among them.
And afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told the Great House, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may dance a feast to me in the wilderness.
Exodus 5:1 · SDV

The verb translated “sent” here and “let my people go” in Exodus 5:1 comes from ⁨שׁלח⁩ (shalach), whose range includes sending forth and releasing. The same root opens a tension inside this summons: a sent command can gather people, while the word also carries the possibility of letting them go.
