This verse in the King James

King James wording
And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.

What the KJV calls a “burnt sacrifice” is already named as what rises, even as the final command directs water over it.

The offering is arranged, cut, and laid out; then the command calls for water to be poured over it and the wood. The scene holds careful preparation beside an apparent barrier, with the outcome still open.

עֹלָה

ʿōlāh

GROWS FROM

עלה

to go up; to ascend

“rising offering” in this verse is ʿōlāh. The offering noun ⁨עֹלָה⁩ (ʿōlāh, “burnt offering”) grows from ⁨עלה⁩ (ʿālāh, “to go up”). Its Hebrew name holds the idea of ascent alongside the burning, before the command to pour water over it.

ALSO GROWS

ʿālāh: to go up; to ascend

עָלָה

The verb carries the upward motion inside the offering’s name.

maʿăleh: an ascent; an upward path

מַעֲלֶה

This related noun makes the root’s rising movement visible in another form.

וַיַּעֲרֹךְ

wayyaʿarokh

GROWS FROM

ערך

to arrange; to set out

“arranged the wood” in this verse is wayyaʿarokh. The verb ⁨וַיַּעֲרֹךְ⁩ (wayyaʿarokh, “he arranged”) carries the sense of setting things out in a deliberate order. The same root describes preparing a table, so the wood is laid out with purpose, not merely moved aside.

ALSO GROWS

maʿarakhah: an array; an ordered line

מַעֲרָכָה

The root can name a deliberate arrangement as well as the act of arranging.

taʿarokh: you set out; you prepare

תַּעֲרֹךְ

This form appears for preparing a table in Psalm 23:5, linking the arranged altar wood with a table set out.

Scripture presents offerings through concrete things set apart and placed before God, from an altar animal to a living body.

And Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean beast and of every clean bird, and sent up rising offerings on the altar.
Genesis 8:20 · SDVNoah’s offering takes concrete form through an altar and animals, as the offering is prepared here.
And its inward parts and its legs he shall wash in water, and the priest shall send all of it up in smoke upon the altar, a rising offering, an offering of fire, a fragrance that settles to the LORD.
Leviticus 1:9 · SDVThe offering is washed and wholly placed on the altar, echoing the physical preparation in this verse.
Therefore I urge you, brothers, through the compassions of God, to set your bodies beside God as a living sacrifice, set apart, well-pleasing to him, which is your true service.
Romans 12:1 · SDVThe offering image extends from the altar to a living body presented to God.
You lay out a table before my face, in full view of those who press me. You make my head rich with oil; my cup is soaked full.
Psalm 23:5 · SDV

The Hebrew uses the same root, ⁨ערך⁩ (ʿārakh, “arrange, set out”), for “put the wood in order” here and “preparest” in this psalm. The shared verb brings the carefully arranged altar and the table set before the speaker into one image of deliberate preparation.
