King James wording
King James Version
And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?THE KEY
The cave’s threshold is where concealment and encounter meet: Elijah’s face is covered, yet the voice addresses him directly.
THE MEANING
You can be guarded and still be met by a voice that addresses you directly. Elijah’s face remains covered as he steps out to the cave’s entrance; from there, the question meets him where he stands. Concealment and direct encounter occupy the same moment.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The false belief that you must be fully open before an encounter can reach you breaks here: Elijah’s face is still covered when the voice addresses him.
THE ROOT
כִּשְׁמֹעַ
ki-shmoa
GROWS FROM
שמע
sh-m-ʿ
hear and respond
“heard and responded” in this verse is ki-shmoa. English “heard” can sound like a private, completed event; שמע (shama, “hear and respond”) carries hearing toward response. Here, hearing is followed by a covered face, an exit, and a stance at the cave’s opening, the response takes visible form.
ALSO GROWS
shama: hear and respond
שָׁמַע
This is the verb behind Elijah’s hearing; what reaches him is followed by a change in his posture and position.
shemuah: report, news, something heard
שְׁמוּעָה
The same root names what is heard as a report, linking the act of hearing with what arrives to be received.
THE PATTERN
A voice reaches a hearer, and hearing takes form in a response.
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak, for your servant hears and responds. My sheep hear and respond to my voice, and I perceive them, and they follow me.And he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why do you pursue me?THE THREAD
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak, for your servant hears and responds. The same root שמע (shama, “hear and respond”) appears in “thy servant heareth.” Samuel makes his hearing explicit in speech; Elijah’s hearing first appears through his covered face and position at the cave’s entrance.
