This verse in the King James

King James wording
I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;

The road shared by all the earth makes strength urgent: responsibility belongs to the life still being walked.

You are on the road all the earth walks, and no one steps outside life’s limit. Within that limit, strength means inhabiting the responsibility of human life now. “Show thyself a man” names mature manhood directly and joins it to the charge to be strong.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that responsibility can wait because life is open-ended gives way here: the road has a limit, so the charge is for now.

וְחָזַקְתָּ

vechazaqta

GROWS FROM

חזק

ḥ-z-q

To be strong, strengthen, or prevail; to hold firm.

“Take firm hold of yourself” in this verse is vechazaqta. This root presents strength as something enacted: standing firm, prevailing, or making firm, rather than simply possessing a quality. The command meets the limit named just before it: finite life calls for steadiness in the responsibility one inhabits.

ALSO GROWS

chazaq: Be strong or prevail.

חָזַק

This is the verb’s basic force in the verse: strength is a present action.

chizzeq: Strengthen or make firm.

חִזֵּק

This related form shows strength as the act of making something firm, illuminating the resolve the charge calls for.

דֶּרֶךְ

derek

GROWS FROM

דרך

d-r-k

To tread or step; the path made by walking.

The verse calls mortality a road all the earth travels, not a distant idea viewed from outside life. The noun “way” grows from the verb “tread,” so the shared end belongs to the path being walked now.

ALSO GROWS

derek: Way, road, or path.

דֶּרֶךְ

This is the word in the verse: every life is on the same road.

darakh: Tread or step.

דָּרַךְ

The verb beneath “way” makes the image bodily and ongoing: a path is the ground being stepped through.

Because life has a limit, strength is a present charge for the work in front of you.

Since his days are cut, and the number of his months is with you, you set his carved limits that he cannot pass over.
Job 14:5 · SDVThe verse names the boundary of a human life, making the present span finite.
Did I not command you? Hold fast and be firm. Do not tremble, and do not be shattered, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9 · SDVStrength and courage are a present charge for the road ahead.
Stay awake, stand firm in trust, act like men, grow strong in your grip.
1 Corinthians 16:13 · SDVThe verse joins firmness and strength to mature responsibility.
Hold fast and be firm, for you will place this people in the land as their portion, the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.
Joshua 1:6 · SDV

The same root, ⁨חזק⁩ (chazaq), anchors both charges: strength is firmness for work entrusted to you. Here, the road is shared by all the earth; Joshua names courage as the posture for carrying a charge forward.
