King James wording
King James Version
But shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom thy brother.THE KEY
Faithful love here becomes a place at the table that remains after the flight is over.
THE MEANING
Faithful care is present as provision: the table keeps a place for those who draw near in flight. Barzillai (בַּרְזִלַּי, Barzillai) is linked to barzel (בַּרְזֶל, barzel), “iron”; the name of strength stands beside a household remembered for care. The table holds both together: strength and dependence belong in the same life.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that help has an expiration point: care received in crisis still belongs in the ordinary life that follows.
THE ROOT
שֻׁלְחָן
shulchan
GROWS FROM
ש־ל־ח
shalach
send forth, release, extend the hand
The table word שֻׁלְחָן (shulchan, table) belongs to the root family of שָׁלַח (shalach, send forth): provision is pictured as something extended toward another. The sons’ place at the table makes kindness durable and tangible.
ALSO GROWS
shaliach: one who is sent; a messenger
שָׁלִיחַ
The root shows provision moving outward through someone sent to carry it.
Shiloach: sent forth; the name of the waters of Shiloah
שִׁלֹחַ
The sent waters echo the root’s movement as provision that reaches outward.
חֶסֶד
chesed
GROWS FROM
ח־ס־ד
chesed
steadfast, loyal care
“do faithful love” in this verse is chesed. חֶסֶד (chesed, faithful love) names loyalty that continues, not only a passing courtesy. The meal makes that care visible as ongoing belonging and provision.
ALSO GROWS
chasid: a faithful or devoted person
חָסִיד
The same root names the person characterized by the loyalty David asks Solomon to enact.
hithassed: to show kindness; to act loyally
הִתְחַסֵּד
This verbal branch presents chesed as care done toward another, not merely a feeling.
קָרְבוּ
qarvu
GROWS FROM
ק־ר־ב
qarab
approach, draw near
“came near” in this verse is qarvu. The line says the sons drew near while David fled. The table gives lasting form to that nearness: those who approach in danger remain included in daily provision.
ALSO GROWS
qarov: near, close
קָרוֹב
The root’s sense of closeness frames their care as presence with David in flight.
qorban: drawing near
קָרְבָּן
This branch carries the same movement of approach, which the table now sustains.
THE PATTERN
Faithful love becomes durable when it turns into a place at the table.
And David said to him, Do not fear, for I will surely do faithful love with you for the sake of Jonathan your father, and will turn back to you all the fields of Saul your father, and you shall eat bread at my table always. You lay out a table before my face, in full view of those who press me. You make my head rich with oil; my cup is soaked full. But when you make a feast, call the emptied, the maimed, the lame, the blind. And you will be flourishing, for they cannot repay you; for you will be repaid at the standing up of the aligned.THE THREAD
And David said to him, Do not fear, for I will surely do faithful love with you for the sake of Jonathan your father, and will turn back to you all the fields of Saul your father, and you shall eat bread at my table always. The same two ideas return: David promises chesed, “faithful love,” and a continuing place at his table. The care David received from Barzillai’s household becomes care he carries forward to another household.
