King James wording
King James Version
And then he built chambers against all the house, five cubits high: and they rested on the house with timber of cedar.THE KEY
The cedar is the grasp that binds the surrounding chambers to the whole house.
THE MEANING
The chambers rise beside the house, and cedar holds them in relation to it. The rooms around the dwelling are connected to the whole, not separate from it.
THE ROOT
וַיֶּאֱחֹז
vayye'echoz
GROWS FROM
אחז
ʾāḥaz
To grasp, take hold, or hold fast.
“rested” in this verse is vayye'echoz. The Hebrew verb carries the sense of grasping or fastening: cedar holds the house in relation to the chambers around it. The same root can describe something caught and held fast, or a possession, showing how holding creates connection and belonging.
ALSO GROWS
ne'echaz: Caught or held fast.
נֶאֱחַז
This form shows the root as a firm hold, like the cedar’s binding of the surrounding structure.
achuzzah: Possession, holding, or estate.
אֲחֻזָּה
Here the root’s sense of holding extends to something held as one’s own, illuminating how the chambers belong to the house they are joined to.
THE PATTERN
What is held fast remains connected to the larger whole that sustains it.
And while he lingered, the men gripped his hand, and the hand of his wife, and the hands of his two daughters, the LORD sparing him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city.Yet I am always with you; you grasp my right hand.Who, being the radiance of his weight and the exact stamp of his foundation, carrying all things by the word of his power, when he had made the cleansing of shortcomings, sat down at the right hand of the Greatness on high.THE THREAD
Even there your hand leads me, and your right hand grasps me.The Hebrew verb translated “hold me” comes from the same root, אחז (ʾāḥaz), as the verb describing cedar holding the house. The hand holds a person in connection just as the cedar holds the chambers to the house.
