King James wording
King James Version
And he overlaid the cherubims with gold.THE KEY
The gold changes what the cherubim reveal to the eye without creating the forms beneath it.
THE MEANING
The verse presents splendor as a layer laid over a form that is already there. The gold catches the eye while the cherubim remain beneath it. What is visible can be real without being the whole of what is present.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that what shines on the surface is the substance of the whole: the gold is laid over the cherubim.
THE ROOT
וַיְצַף
wayetsaf
GROWS FROM
צפה
ts-p-h
To spread a covering over; to overlay or plate.
“sheathed” in this verse is wayetsaf. The verb describes gold laid over the cherubim, not gold from which they are made. The coating changes what catches the eye while the form underneath remains.
ALSO GROWS
tsippuy: Coating; plating.
צִפּוּי
This related noun keeps the gold’s status clear: it is a covering layer over something else.
metsuppeh: Covered; plated over.
מְצֻפֶּה
This derived form describes an object by its covered state, holding the object and its visible layer together.
THE PATTERN
A covering can change what is seen while the form beneath remains present.
And you sheathe it in clean gold, within and without you sheathe it, and make upon it a crown of gold round about. And the whole house he sheathed with gold, until he had finished all the house; also the whole altar that was by the innermost room he sheathed with gold. But we hold this treasure in clay vessels, so that the overflow of strength may be of God and not from us.THE THREAD
And you sheathe it in clean gold, within and without you sheathe it, and make upon it a crown of gold round about. Both verses use צפה (tsaphah, to overlay): here, the cherubim receive gold; there, the ark receives pure gold within and without. The shared verb makes the gold a deliberate layer over a form that remains beneath it.
