This verse in the King James

King James wording
So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD.

The LORD’s “glory” is weight: it fills the house so fully that the priests cannot keep standing to serve.

The verse meets you with divine presence as weight: the LORD’s kavod fills the house until the priests cannot stand to minister. The cloud makes the filling visible, and the priests’ bodies register its force. Their service pauses in the presence it was meant to serve.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that sacred service must continue whenever people are ready to perform it. Here, the LORD’s presence interrupts the service rather than remaining its backdrop.

כָּבוֹד

kavod

GROWS FROM

כבד

To be heavy; to be weighty.

English “glory” can sound like something seen, but ⁨כָּבוֹד⁩ (kavod, weight or glory) carries the sense of substance and weight. The priests’ inability to stand shows that this weight is not decorative: it fills the house with a presence that interrupts their work.

ALSO GROWS

kāvēd: Heavy; weighty.

כָּבֵד

This adjective makes the physical force within kavod explicit: what is glorious is also weighty.

kibbēd: To honor; to treat as weighty.

כִּבֵּד

The same root connects honor with weight. The kavod filling the house is the LORD’s own weight, not merely a display of brightness.

Divine weight can fill sacred space so fully that human service and access stop.

And Moses could not come into the tent of meeting, for the cloud settled upon it, and the weight of the LORD filled the dwelling.
Exodus 40:35 · SDVThe cloud and the LORD’s filling presence prevent Moses from entering the tent.
And the priests could not stand to attend before the cloud, for the weight of the LORD had filled the house of God.
2 Chronicles 5:14 · SDVThe filled house again brings priestly service to a halt.
And the temple is filled with smoke from the weight of God and from his strength; and no one is able to enter into the temple until the seven blows of the seven messengers reach their end.
Revelation 15:8 · SDVThe temple’s filling again makes human entry impossible.
And let his weighty name be blessed for the ages, and let the whole earth be filled with his weight. Amen, and amen.
Psalm 72:19 · SDV

The same Hebrew root ⁨כבד⁩ (k-b-d; kābad, to be weighty) appears in “glory” here and in 1 Kings 8:11. In Kings the weight fills one house; in this verse the whole earth is filled, opening the temple scene onto a wider fullness.
