This verse in the King James

King James wording
And all the people that were left of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, which were not of the children of Israel,

The Hebrew word translated “left” shares its root with “remnant”: those who remain are still named as a people, not reduced to an empty margin.

When you are marked as outside a group’s lineage, you still remain present and distinct; the boundary does not erase you. The verse keeps those left in view as peoples with names, not an anonymous mass.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

What lies outside my group’s lineage is just an unnamed remainder.

הַנִּשְׁאָר

GROWS FROM

שׁאר

sha’ar

Remain, be left over.

English makes “left” sound like a bare condition. The Hebrew word comes from the same root that names a remnant, so what survives retains a people’s distinct identity instead of thinning into a faceless leftover.

ALSO GROWS

she’ar: Remnant, remainder.

שְׁאָר

This noun names what remains; the shared root holds the people in the verse as a distinct remainder.

she’erit: Remnant, surviving part.

שְׁאֵרִית

This branch names a surviving community, connecting being left over with continuing to exist as a people.

A remnant remains legible as a people even when only part survives.

And God sent me before you to set for you a remnant in the land, and to keep you alive by a great escape.
Genesis 45:7 · SDVThe preserved posterity is a surviving part kept in view, echoing the people who remain in 1 Kings.
And it will come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and the escape of the house of Jacob, will no longer keep leaning their full weight upon the one who struck them, but they will lean their full weight upon the LORD, the Set-Apart One of Israel, in truth.
Isaiah 10:20 · SDVThe remnant is named as Israel and Jacob’s people, still identifiable after escape and loss.
So also now, in this present season, there is a remnant left behind, picked out by favor.
Romans 11:5 · SDVThe text still speaks of a remnant as a present, recognizable group.
And it will come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and the escape of the house of Jacob, will no longer keep leaning their full weight upon the one who struck them, but they will lean their full weight upon the LORD, the Set-Apart One of Israel, in truth.
Isaiah 10:20 · SDV

The Hebrew word rendered “remnant” is ⁨שְׁאָר⁩ (she’ar), from the same ⁨שׁאר⁩ root as “left” in 1 Kings. The shared seed connects the act of remaining with the people who remain: survival still has a name.
