King James wording
King James Version
Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?THE KEY
The oil appoints Saul over the LORD’s inheritance while leaving ownership exactly where it was.
THE MEANING
The oil marks an authority received from the LORD, while “his inheritance” keeps the people belonging to the LORD. Leadership is a charge over what is entrusted, not ownership of it. The verse holds appointment and accountability together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Authority over people does not make them yours; the one who entrusts the role remains their owner.
THE ROOT
מָשַׁח
māšaḥ
GROWS FROM
משח
m-š-ḥ
To apply or spread oil; to anoint.
The verb carries the image of oil applied to the head, making appointment a visible marking for a role. The same root forms mashiach, “anointed one,” joining the act and the person marked by it; “over his inheritance” keeps that role under the LORD’s ownership.
ALSO GROWS
māšîaḥ: Anointed one
מָשִׁיחַ
The person marked by anointing shares the root of the act itself, tying appointment to an entrusted identity.
mišḥāh: Anointing; anointing oil
מִשְׁחָה
This branch names the oil and anointing associated with the act performed in the verse.
THE PATTERN
Authority over God’s people is entrusted, while belonging remains God’s.
From behind the nursing ewes he brought him to pasture Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance. So watch yourselves, and the whole flock, in which the Set-Apart Breath has set you as watchers over, to feed the assembly of God, which he made his own through his own blood.Nor as those pressing down upon the portions, but becoming imprints for the flock.THE THREAD
I have found David my servant; with my set-apart oil I have anointed him.“Anointed” in both verses comes from משח (m-š-ḥ), māšaḥ, “to anoint, apply oil.” Psalm 89:20 makes the source of the appointment plain: God anoints the servant, so the role begins with God’s choosing and remains answerable to God.
