King James wording
King James Version
Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,THE KEY
The Hebrew root for “reigned” also gives “king” and “kingdom,” joining the ruler, the act, and the realm in one word-family.
THE MEANING
This verse presents authority as something counted in time and directed toward actual people. A reign has a duration and a human reach; it is not an abstract power outside either one.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that authority is timeless or abstract: the verse measures it and names the people within its reach.
THE ROOT
מָלַךְ
malakh
GROWS FROM
מלך
To reign or rule as king.
“reigned” in this verse is malakh. Hebrew uses this same root for reigning, a king, and a kingdom. English separates the action from the ruler and realm; the root holds them together as one structure of rule.
ALSO GROWS
melekh: A king or ruler.
מֶלֶךְ
The shared root links the act of reigning to the person who rules.
mamlakhah: A kingdom or realm.
מַמְלָכָה
The same root names the domain of the reign, which this verse identifies as Israel.
THE PATTERN
Scripture locates rule within time and names the people or territory within its reach.
And it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah, king of Israel, that Hezekiah son of Ahaz, king of Judah, began to reign. Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, with Pontius Pilate leading Judea, and Herod ruling a fourth of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruling a fourth of Ituraea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruling a fourth of Abilene.THE THREAD
The LORD reigns for ages and ages. The Hebrew word translated “reign” here and in Exodus comes from the same root, מלך (malak, to reign). The shared root sets Saul’s counted years beside a reign described as enduring, widening what the word itself can hold.
