King James wording
King James Version
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.THE KEY
Here, “remember” carries active reckoning: the attack on Israel’s road remains present in the divine account as they come up from constriction.
THE MEANING
An attack on the way out of constriction does not vanish just because the road continues; the harm remains in the account. The verse presents divine remembrance as active attention and keeps the violence of the attack in view.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that escape from constriction makes the harm suffered on the way irrelevant or finished.
THE ROOT
פָּקַדְתִּי
paqadti
GROWS FROM
פקד
Attend to, inspect, muster, or appoint; remembrance here carries active attention and reckoning.
“visit” in this verse is paqadti. The Hebrew uses פָּקַדְתִּי (paqadti, “I have attended to” or “taken account of”), from a root that can also mean to inspect, muster, or appoint. “Remember” therefore carries active attention alongside recollection: the attack is still under notice, not lost to the road.
ALSO GROWS
paqad: Attend to, visit, inspect, or muster.
פָּקַד
The root makes remembrance an act of attention directed toward what has been done.
pequddah: Oversight, appointment, charge, or visitation.
פְּקֻדָּה
The harm remains within a field of oversight and account.
paqid: Official or overseer.
פָּקִיד
This related word for one who oversees echoes the active, watchful shade of the verse’s remembrance.
מִמִּצְרַיִם
mi-Mitzrayim
GROWS FROM
צרר
Bind, press, or constrict; the related צַר (tsar) carries the sense of narrowness.
“Egypt” in this verse is mi-Mitzrayim. Mitzrayim is linked here with צַר (tsar, “narrow” or “constricted”) and its dual ending -ayim, the two narrows. Israel is coming up from constriction, yet the attack is still set across the road toward spaciousness.
ALSO GROWS
tsarar: Bind, press, or trouble.
צָרַר
The constricting sense gives the movement out of Egypt the shape of release from pressure.
tsar: Narrow, tight, or constricted.
צַר
This is the narrowness echoed in Mitzrayim as Israel comes up from it.
metsar: Strait, distress, or confined place.
מֵצַר
The same narrowness can name lived pressure, keeping the verse’s movement from Egypt vivid.
בַּדֶּרֶךְ
ba-derekh
GROWS FROM
דרך
Tread, step, or travel along a track.
“road” in this verse is ba-derekh. The word for “way” carries the image of a track where feet tread; the attack is placed on that track as Israel moves. The Hebrew clause uses שָׂם לוֹ (sam lo, “he set for him”), so what the KJV renders as laying wait is also pictured as an obstruction deliberately set in the way.
ALSO GROWS
darakh: Tread, step, or march.
דָּרַךְ
The root makes the way a route actually traveled, not a distant or abstract setting.
derekh: Way, path, road, or course.
דֶּרֶךְ
The verse locates the attack on the very course Israel is traveling.
THE PATTERN
The road out of constriction does not erase violence inflicted along the way; the harm remains in divine reckoning.
Then Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim.Remember what Amalek did to you on the road, when you came out of Egypt. For her shortcomings have clung as high as heaven, and God has remembered her crookedness.THE THREAD
Remember what Amalek did to you on the road, when you came out of Egypt.Deuteronomy uses זָכוֹר (zākhōr, “remember”), from זכר (z-k-r), while this verse uses פָּקַדְתִּי (paqadti, “I have attended to” or “taken account of”). The same attack is held in the people’s memory and presented as active divine reckoning.
