King James wording
King James Version
That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?THE KEY
A covenant is pictured as a binding cut, while the absence of someone uncovering the ear makes hidden allegiance feel like proof of a plot.
THE MEANING
When fear takes hold, missing information can feel like evidence, and every bond around a person can look like a conspiracy. The words “all” and “none” turn suspicion into a total account of reality before anything has been disclosed.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that nobody’s disclosure proves everyone is conspiring: silence about an event is not itself proof of a plot.
THE ROOT
קְשַׁרְתֶּם
qeshartem
GROWS FROM
קשר
q-sh-r
To bind, tie, or fasten.
“bound yourselves together” in this verse is qeshartem. English “conspired” names a plot, while the Hebrew root carries the concrete sense of binding. The accusation pictures the people not merely as disagreeing with him, but as tied together against him.
ALSO GROWS
qashar: To bind, tie, or fasten; also to conspire.
קָשַׁר
The verse uses this binding word for the speaker’s claim that everyone is joined against him.
qesher: A bond or conspiracy.
קֶשֶׁר
This noun holds together the root’s two shades: people bound together, and a plot formed by that bond.
בִּכְרָת
bikrat
GROWS FROM
כרת
k-r-t
To cut or cut off.
“cut a covenant” in this verse is bikrat. The phrase behind “made a league” speaks of cutting a covenant. The charge imagines allegiance as a bond made through a cut, with David’s connection to the speaker’s son understood as a threat to the speaker.
ALSO GROWS
karat berit: To cut a covenant.
כָּרַת בְּרִית
This idiom makes the verse’s “league” a bond pictured through cutting.
keritut: A severance or divorce.
כְּרִיתוּת
This related form carries the root’s sense of cutting a bond apart, echoing how the speaker experiences the alleged alliance as a break against him.
גֹּלֶה
goleh
GROWS FROM
גלה
g-l-h
To uncover or reveal.
“uncovers” in this verse is goleh. The Hebrew pictures disclosure as uncovering the ear: no one is opening the speaker’s hearing to what is happening. English “sheweth” hides this bodily image and its connection between revelation and listening.
ALSO GROWS
galah: To uncover or reveal.
גָּלָה
This is the root’s basic action, expressed in the verse as uncovering the ear by disclosing information.
niglah: To be revealed or appear.
נִגְלָה
This form shows the same movement from hiddenness into view that the speaker says he is being denied.
THE PATTERN
Fear can treat undisclosed motives as settled facts, while scripture distinguishes what is hidden from what has actually been heard or revealed.
The one who returns a word before he hears it, folly and shame are his.Hide me from the huddle of evildoers; from the rumble of the workers of crookedness. For there is nothing covered that will not be uncovered, and nothing hidden that will not be known.THE THREAD
Now the LORD had uncovered the ear of Samuel a day before Saul came, saying,The Hebrew behind both passages uses the image of uncovering the ear: here the speaker says no one does it for him, while in 1 Samuel 9:15 the LORD reveals something to Samuel’s ear. The repeated image makes disclosure the hinge between what is hidden and what can be known.
