King James wording
King James Version
See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.THE KEY
A hiding place is only as hidden as the pursuer’s knowledge of the land.
THE MEANING
The passage shows a hunt turning sight into knowledge, knowledge into certainty, and certainty into movement. Every place of concealment becomes part of a map Saul’s men must report back, and Saul goes only after David’s presence in the land is established. The search reaches through all the thousands of Judah, whose name, Yehudah, carries the sense of praise or acknowledgment.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Being hidden is not the same as being beyond pursuit; concealment can be mapped by those who know the terrain.
THE ROOT
הַמַּחֲבֹאִים
hammaḥăḇōʾîm
GROWS FROM
חבא
ḥ-b-ʾ
To hide or conceal.
“hides himself” in this verse is hammaḥăḇōʾîm. The same root names both the hiding places and David’s act of hiding himself. Hebrew presents the location and the concealment as one thing: the hiding takes shape as a place that can be mapped.
ALSO GROWS
maḥăḇōʾîm: Hiding places.
מַחֲבֹאִים
The noun makes concealment into a location the pursuers are told to learn.
yitḥabbēʾ: He hides himself.
יִתְחַבֵּא
The verb is the same root in action, joining David’s concealment to the places where he conceals himself.
וּדְעוּ
ûḏəʿû
GROWS FROM
ידע
y-d-ʿ
To know or recognize through perception and familiarity.
The command to “see and know” calls for direct familiarity with the hiding places, not an abstract report. Knowledge of the terrain is what makes the concealed locations legible to the searchers.
ALSO GROWS
yādaʿ: To know or recognize.
יָדַע
This verb names the familiarity the scouts are ordered to gain with the places where David may be concealed.
daʿat: Knowledge or perception.
דַּעַת
This noun grows from the same root and shows knowing as the result of perception.
יְהוּדָה
Yehūdāh
GROWS FROM
ידה
y-d-h
To praise, give thanks, or acknowledge.
Judah’s name carries the language of praise and acknowledgment, as Leah’s naming explains in Genesis 29:35. Here, the search extends across all the clans of that named territory, making Judah itself the field of pursuit.
ALSO GROWS
yādāh: To praise, thank, or acknowledge.
יָדָה
This verb is the root associated with Judah’s name and reveals the name’s nature.
tôdāh: Thanksgiving or praise.
תּוֹדָה
This related form carries the same root’s movement of acknowledgment into an expression of thanks.
THE PATTERN
Concealment becomes refuge, exposure, or pursuit according to who hides, who searches, and who sees.
And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the breath of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the face of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. Was it not told to my lord what I did when Jezebel struck down the prophets of the LORD, how I hid a hundred men of the LORD's prophets by fifties in a cave, and fed them with bread and waters? So that your compassion may be in the hidden; and your Father, who sees in the hidden, himself will give it back to you in the open.THE THREAD
Was it not told to my lord what I did when Jezebel struck down the prophets of the LORD, how I hid a hundred men of the LORD's prophets by fifties in a cave, and fed them with bread and waters? This verse uses the same root חבא (ḥ-b-ʾ, hide or conceal) for Obadiah’s hiding of the prophets. Beside the command to map David’s hiding places, it reveals that concealment can serve as shelter or become part of a hunt, depending on the people and purpose around it.
