King James wording
King James Version
And David sent out ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name:THE KEY
The greeting carries David’s nature into the encounter, and its hidden content is a wish for wholeness.
THE MEANING
You see ten messengers sent to Nabal as representatives, not anonymous couriers: they carry David’s name into the meeting. The Hebrew behind “greet him” asks after Nabal for peace and well-being, so the opening words seek wholeness before anything else is said. Your words, too, arrive carrying the character of the one who sends them.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A greeting is not empty social polish, detached from the nature of the person who sends it; here it carries both identity and a wish for the other’s well-being.
THE ROOT
שָׁלַח
shalach
GROWS FROM
שלח
To send out, dispatch, or release.
The messengers are sent to carry David’s presence into another person’s household. “In my name” is בִּשְׁמִי (bishmi, “in my name”), from שֵׁם (shem, “name” or “reputation”): they speak as representatives of David’s nature. David’s own name, דָּוִד (Dāwīd, “beloved”), adds the nature their greeting carries.
ALSO GROWS
shaliach: Messenger or emissary.
שָׁלִיחַ
The sent men act as emissaries: their words carry the sender’s identity.
shilluaḥ: Sending, dismissal, or release.
שִׁלּוּחַ
The same root holds both dispatching someone outward and releasing them to go.
שָׁלוֹם
shalom
GROWS FROM
שלם
To be whole, complete, or sound; also to make whole or repay.
The Hebrew phrase asks Nabal for shalom, peace, welfare, wholeness, where the KJV gives “greet.” The greeting is therefore more than a polite opening: it names the well-being the messengers seek for him and his household.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Peace, welfare, or wholeness.
שָׁלוֹם
This is the word beneath the greeting’s request for Nabal’s well-being.
shalem: Whole or complete.
שָׁלֵם
It shows the wholeness held inside the greeting’s wish for peace.
shillem: Repaid or recompensed.
שִׁלֵּם
The same root also describes making a balance complete through repayment.
דָּוִד
Dāwīd
GROWS FROM
דוד
Beloved; also used for “uncle.”
David’s name is associated with דּוֹד (dod, “beloved”). The messengers bear the name of the beloved as they carry his greeting into Nabal’s presence.
ALSO GROWS
dod: Beloved; also uncle.
דּוֹד
This is the name-root associated with David and brings the nature of “beloved” into view.
dodim: Affection or loves.
דּוֹדִים
The related form names affection, extending the root’s sense of belovedness.
THE PATTERN
A messenger carries the sender’s character into an encounter through words spoken in the sender’s name.
I have oxen and donkeys, flocks, and menservants and maidservants. I have sent to tell my lord, so that I may find favor in your eyes.I have come in my Father's nature, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own nature, him you will receive. So we are sent in the place of the Anointed One, as though God were urging you through us. We beg you in his place. Be exchanged back to God.THE THREAD
And so shall you say to him who lives in prosperity, Wholeness be to you, and wholeness to your house, and wholeness to all that you have. The next verse spells out the peace hidden inside “greet him”: shalom is spoken over Nabal, his household, and all he has. The repeated שָׁלוֹם (shalom, “peace, welfare, wholeness”), from שלם (sh-l-m, “to be whole”), shows the greeting extending its wish across his whole sphere of life.
