King James wording
King James Version
And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast.THE KEY
The repeated shalom carries wholeness from the living person to the house and everything in it.
THE MEANING
The greeting meets you as living, then speaks wholeness over you, your house, and everything in your care. Shalom gathers soundness, completeness, and well-being into one word, reaching across the whole sphere of your life. The KJV’s “him that liveth in prosperity” opens with the Hebrew idea of “the living one” before the threefold shalom.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that peace belongs only to private inward feeling dissolves here: the verse speaks wholeness over the person, the household, and all they possess.
THE ROOT
שָׁלוֹם
shalom
GROWS FROM
שׁלם
sh-l-m
To be whole, complete, or sound.
The repeated English “peace” carries one word, shalom, whose range includes wholeness, soundness, and well-being. Its branches include being whole and making good what is owed, giving the greeting a restorative sense of completeness.
ALSO GROWS
shalem: Whole, complete
שָׁלֵם
Shows that the greeting’s peace carries the sense of a life made whole and sound.
shillem: Repay, recompense, make good
שִׁלֵּם
The same root can describe making good what is owed, giving wholeness a restorative edge.
לֶחָי
lechai
GROWS FROM
חיה
ḥ-y-h
To live, remain alive.
The Hebrew greeting begins with lechai, “to the living one,” rendered in the KJV as “him that liveth in prosperity.” That opening lets the threefold wholeness land on life itself, then widen to the house and possessions.
ALSO GROWS
chai: Living, alive
חַי
Names the addressee as living before the greeting speaks shalom over him.
chayyim: Life
חַיִּים
Keeps the root’s life sense audible as the greeting extends wholeness across the addressee’s whole sphere.
THE PATTERN
Wholeness is spoken across the full sphere of life, from its dwelling to its relationships and inward life.
Let there be wholeness within your walls, and ease within your palaces. And into whatever house you enter, first say, Let wholeness be to this house.Beloved, concerning all things I pray that your way goes well and that you are whole, just as your living soul goes well.THE THREAD
Let there be wholeness within your walls, and ease within your palaces. The word “Peace” is shalom, the same Hebrew word repeated over the person, house, and all they have in this verse. Psalm 122:7 places that same wholeness inside walls and palaces, making the greeting’s widening circle visible as a dwelling.
