King James wording
King James Version
Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:THE KEY
The test sets the cows’ pull toward their calves against the path they carry the ark along.
THE MEANING
The test makes two pulls visible at once: the nursing cows carry the ark on a new cart while their calves are brought back from them. Their bond with the young remains part of the test; it is not erased or explained away. The cows’ direction becomes the sign.
THE ROOT
עֲגָלָה
ʿăgālāh
GROWS FROM
עגל
ʿ-g-l
To roll or revolve; עֲגָלָה means a rolling cart, while עֵגֶל means a calf.
The word for cart and the word for calf share the consonants ע־ג־ל, linking what carries the ark with what draws the cows away from it. The mothers carry forward while the young that pull them home are kept back.
ALSO GROWS
ʿăgālāh: Cart, wagon
עֲגָלָה
This is the rolling carrier that bears the ark.
ʿēgel: Calf, young bovine
עֵגֶל
The calves kept from their mothers share the cart’s עגל consonants.
THE PATTERN
An animal untouched by ordinary training can become the sign through which a sacred task is carried.
This is the statute of the instruction which the LORD has commanded, saying, Speak to the children of Israel, that they take to you a red heifer, whole, with no blemish in her, and upon whom no yoke has ever come. And he said to them, Go into the village facing you, and straightway as you enter it, you will find a colt bound, on which no one has yet sat. Untie him and lead him.And the cows took the straight road to the road of Beth-shemesh, and walked along the raised road, lowing as they walked, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left. And the princes of the Philistines went after them to the border of Beth-shemesh.THE THREAD
And the cows took the straight road to the road of Beth-shemesh, and walked along the raised road, lowing as they walked, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left. And the princes of the Philistines went after them to the border of Beth-shemesh.The cows named here are the ones that take the straight road, lowing as they go, without turning aside. The repeated word ties the cart-and-calves test to its visible outcome: the pull toward the young remains audible, but it does not redirect their path.
