This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer’s house is.

Saul asks where the seer’s house is while standing face to face with the very person who will reveal himself as the seer.

You can stand inside the encounter you are trying to locate. The question seeks an address, while the one who carries the answer is already speaking.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The false belief is that the encounter must still be somewhere else, beyond the present moment; here, the sought seer is already within reach.

וַיִּגַּשׁ

vayyigash

GROWS FROM

נגשׁ

n-g-sh

to approach or draw near

“drew near” in this verse is vayyigash. The word carries the movement of coming close, not merely passing by. Saul is already near the seer before he knows that the man before him is the one he seeks.

ALSO GROWS

nigash: approached, came near

נִגַּשׁ

This is the same verb in a simple form: Saul’s question comes from a place of physical closeness.

higgish: brought near, presented

הִגִּישׁ

The causative form shows the same root’s movement from approaching to bringing something into proximity.

רֹאֶה

ro’eh

GROWS FROM

ראה

r-ʾ-h

to see, look, or perceive

“house of the one who sees” in this verse is ro’eh. A seer is named by the act of seeing: the word holds perception inside the title. Saul asks for the seer’s house, while Samuel, the one who sees, stands before him.

ALSO GROWS

ra’ah: to see or perceive

רָאָה

The verb reveals the seeing at the heart of the title “seer.”

mar’eh: appearance or vision

מַרְאֶה

This branch links seeing to what comes into view, deepening the sense of a seer as one who perceives.

The presence being sought can already be near before it is recognized.

And Jacob woke out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not perceive it.
Genesis 28:16 · SDVThe speaker recognizes that the sought divine presence is already there, though it was not perceived at first.
John answered them, saying, "I immerse in water, but in the midst of you stands one whom you do not know."
John 1:26 · SDVThe one not yet recognized is already standing among the people seeking to identify him.
And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the one who sees. Go up before my face to the high place, for you shall eat with me today, and tomorrow I will send you away, and I will tell you all that is in your heart.
1 Samuel 9:19 · SDV

The question points Saul toward a house, and Samuel’s answer identifies the person already before him as the seer. The distance collapses: the sought encounter is already underway.
