This verse in the King James

King James wording
Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:

Integrity is not a private self-image; it is a life open to the witness of people and God.

The life lived among you is visible: people can bear witness to it, and God sees it fully. Holiness, alignment, and blamelessness describe a shared, observable way of being present with others, not merely an inward claim.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that good intentions alone define integrity dissolves here: the verse puts conduct where other people can attest to it and God can see it.

μάρτυρες

martyres

GROWS FROM

μαρτυρ-

martyr-

To bear witness; to testify.

The Greek word names someone who gives testimony, not simply someone who happens to be present. With people and God both named as witnesses, the life described is open to what can be seen and truthfully attested.

ALSO GROWS

martyria: testimony

μαρτυρία

This branch makes clear that witnessing can become a spoken account of what a life shows.

martyreō: to testify, bear witness

μαρτυρέω

The same root turns the witness from a passive observer into someone who attests to what is seen.

δικαίως

dikaiōs

GROWS FROM

δικ-

dik-

What is right or just; alignment with what is fitting.

“aligned” in this verse is dikaiōs. The root family carries the sense of rightness and alignment, giving “justly” a depth beyond a rule being followed. Here, alignment belongs alongside holiness and blamelessness as a quality of conduct among others.

ALSO GROWS

dikaiosynē: alignment

δικαιοσύνη

This related form shows the shared root’s sense of right relation and alignment.

dikaioō: to set right, justify

δικαιόω

This branch carries the movement toward what is right, illuminating justice as alignment rather than mere appearance.

ἐγενήθημεν

egenēthēmen

GROWS FROM

γεν-

gen-

To come into being; to become.

“became” in this verse is egenēthēmen. The verb translated “behaved ourselves” comes from a word for becoming or coming to be. The verse thus points to what the speakers were among the believers, their way of being there, not only to a performance they claimed afterward.

ALSO GROWS

genesis: origin, birth, coming into being

γένεσις

This related word preserves the root’s sense of something coming to be.

genos: kind, family, lineage

γένος

This branch shows the root describing what something is or becomes, rather than a single outward act.

A life aligned in public can be attested by people and laid open before God.

Here I am. Answer against me before the LORD and before his anointed one. Whose ox have I taken, or whose donkey? Whom have I pressed, or whom have I crushed? From whose hand have I taken a ransom to shut my eyes with it? And I will return it to you.
1 Samuel 12:3 · SDVSamuel places his conduct before both human witnesses and the LORD, making integrity answerable to what others can attest.
For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in singleness and the sunlit clarity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the favor of God, we have walked in the world, and all the more overflowing toward you.
2 Corinthians 1:12 · SDVA clear conscience and a life lived among others meet in testimony about how one is present in the world.
Pray for us, for we trust that we have a good conscience, willing in all things to walk well.
Hebrews 13:18 · SDVThe verse joins a good conscience to an honest life, giving inward conviction a visible shape.
I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.
John 8:18 · SDV

John uses ⁨μαρτυρέω⁩ (martyreō, to bear witness), from the same ⁨μαρτυρ-⁩ root as the witnesses in this verse. The shared root brings the paired testimony into view: a life is witnessed both by the one who speaks and by another who sees.
