King James wording
King James Version
For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.THE KEY
Someone else’s “now we live” is bound to your standing in the Lord.
THE MEANING
Your standing in the Lord reaches beyond your own inner stability: another person’s life is bound to it. The verse speaks of shared, present-tense vitality, where one person’s steadfastness strengthens the life of others.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that your faithfulness affects only your private inner life dissolves here: another person’s life is tied to your standing.
THE ROOT
στήκετε
stēkete
GROWS FROM
στηκ-/στα-, related to ἵστημι (histēmi)
To stand, or to be set in place.
“stand firm” in this verse is stēkete. The verb is plural and ongoing: “you all keep standing.” Its word family links standing with being set in place, presenting the community’s footing as something sustained rather than a passing display of resolve. That shared standing is what makes “we live” more than private survival.
ALSO GROWS
histēmi: Stand; set or place.
ἵστημι
The related verb holds together standing and being set in place, giving the community’s firmness the sense of maintained footing.
stasis: Standing; position.
στάσις
This branch names the position produced by standing, echoing how the believers’ continuing place in the Lord becomes the ground for shared life.
THE PATTERN
Across scripture, steadfastness is a shared footing anchored in trust and the Lord.
A Song of degrees. Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which does not totter, but settles for the ages.Stay awake, stand firm in the faith, act like men, grow strong.Only live as citizens in a manner that carries the weight of the good news of the Anointed One, so that whether I come and see you or, being away, I hear of the things around you, that you stand in one spirit, one mind, wrestling together for the faith of the good news.THE THREAD
So then, my brothers, beloved and longed for, my joy and my crown, so stand firm in the Lord, beloved. This verse repeats the Greek verb στήκω (stēkō), “stand fast.” In Thessalonians, their standing is the condition of shared life; in Philippians, “stand fast in the Lord” follows the speaker calling them his joy and crown. The shared root makes steadfastness relational: one person’s life and another’s joy are bound together.
