King James wording
King James Version
And in every several city he put shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong, having Judah and Benjamin on his side.THE KEY
His strength is distributed: defenses are placed in every city, while Judah and Benjamin stand with him.
THE MEANING
You see security taking shape in two ways: shields and spears are set in every city, and Judah and Benjamin are with him. The strengthening reaches across the cities while allegiance gathers them around one ruler.
THE ROOT
וַיְחַזְּקֵם
vayeḥazzeqem
GROWS FROM
חזק
To be strong or firm, to strengthen; in some forms, to grasp or take hold.
“strengthened them exceedingly” in this verse is vayeḥazzeqem. This root spans firmness and grasping: strength can be expressed as what holds fast. Here, the cities are made strong through defenses set in place.
ALSO GROWS
ḥazaq: Strong, firm.
חָזָק
This adjective names the state the verb creates: the cities are made firm against attack.
vayyaḥazeq: He grasped or took hold.
וַיַּחֲזֶק
In Exodus 4:4, this form describes Moses catching hold of the serpent, giving the root’s idea of strength a tactile sense.
נָתַן
natan
GROWS FROM
נתן
To give, set, or place.
The verb translated “put” can also mean “give” or “set.” Each city receives defensive capacity of its own, so the protection is distributed across the territory.
ALSO GROWS
nātûn: Given, assigned, or placed.
נָתוּן
This form makes clear that something set in place can also be understood as assigned to its location.
mattan: A gift or present.
מַתָּן
The noun shows the root’s sense of giving: the shields and spears are furnished to each city.
THE PATTERN
Defense becomes tangible when protective capacity is positioned where a threat can reach.
And he took hold of himself, and built up all the breached wall, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall outside, and strengthened the Millo in the city of David, and made arrows and shield in abundance. And I stood the people in the lower places beneath the wall, and on the higher places, by their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.Over all, taking up the shield of trust, with which you will be able to put out all the burning arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of deliverance, and the sword of the breath, which is the word of God.THE THREAD
And the LORD said to Moses, Stretch out your hand, and grip it by its tail. And he stretched out his hand and gripped it, and it became a rod in his palm. The verb behind “made them strong” comes from חזק, the same root used here for Moses catching hold of the serpent. The connection gives strength a tactile dimension: what is strengthened becomes firm and held in place.
