King James wording
King James Version
And it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.THE KEY
A kingdom can be firmly established while its source of direction has already been abandoned, and the people can follow the ruler into that departure.
THE MEANING
This verse addresses the reader where life appears settled: outward strength can coexist with departure from the LORD’s instruction. Rehoboam, רְחַבְעָם (Reḥavʿam, “the people are enlarged”), carries enlargement in his name, while the verse shows all Israel following his direction. A ruler’s turn becomes a collective direction.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that success or stability proves continued alignment with the LORD’s instruction; here, the kingdom is strengthened as that instruction is forsaken.
THE ROOT
עָזַב
azav
GROWS FROM
עָזַב
azav
to leave or abandon
“loosened his hold on” in this verse is azav. The verb names a departure that leaves the LORD’s instruction behind. Related forms describe both those who forsake and the condition of being forsaken, showing how a chosen direction can become a lasting state.
ALSO GROWS
ozvim: those who leave or forsake
עֹזְבִים
This participle names people by their act of departure, showing how forsaking can become a defining direction.
azuv: left behind, forsaken
עָזוּב
This form describes the resulting state: the instruction is not merely disobeyed in a moment but left behind.
תּוֹרַת
torat
GROWS FROM
יָרָה
yarah
to cast or point; in related forms, to teach or direct
“law” in this verse is torat. The LORD’s instruction carries the sense of directed teaching: it points a way and forms a path. Forsaking it means leaving a source of orientation, extending beyond the breaking of a single command.
ALSO GROWS
torah: instruction, teaching, direction
תּוֹרָה
This is the noun in its basic form; it shows that what Rehoboam leaves is guidance that directs a life.
moreh: teacher, instructor
מוֹרֶה
The same root names one who teaches or directs, bringing out the guiding character of the instruction.
THE PATTERN
Outward strength or abundance can accompany departure from the LORD’s direction, and a leader’s turn can shape a community’s course.
Then your heart is raised high, and you let the LORD your God slip from you, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; It came to be, when Solomon was old, that his wives bent his heart after other gods, and his heart was not whole with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.Watch, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of not leaning your full weight, in stepping away from the living God.THE THREAD
But if you surely turn back, and let go of my statutes and my commandments, which I have set before you, and go to serve other gods, and bow down to them. The verb translated “forsake” in both verses is עָזַב (azav, to leave or abandon). The warning names departure from the LORD’s statutes and commandments; this verse shows that same departure after the king’s consolidation, with all Israel following.
