This verse in the King James

King James wording
For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.

What English calls a “perfect” heart is a whole heart, and the LORD’s searching gaze crosses the earth to meet that wholeness with strength.

The LORD’s gaze ranges across the whole earth, meeting a heart that is whole toward him with strength. When your heart is no longer whole toward him, the verse calls that movement foolish and names wars as its consequence.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that God is too distant to meet you: his eyes range across the earth to strengthen the whole-hearted. It also undoes the belief that divided reliance costs nothing; the verse names wars as its consequence.

מְשֹׁטְטוֹת

meshōṭəṭōt

GROWS FROM

שׁוּט

To go about, roam, or move to and fro.

“run to and fro” in this verse is meshōṭəṭōt. This is not a single glance; the verb pictures eyes moving throughout the land. The motion gives the LORD’s attention a searching reach: the whole earth lies within its sweep.

ALSO GROWS

shut: To roam or go back and forth.

שׁוּט

In Job 1:7, the Adversary says he has gone to and fro in the earth; here the same roaming root belongs to the LORD’s eyes, making the gaze a sweeping search.

shotet: To range or wander through.

שׁוֹטֵט

Amos 8:12 uses this root for people ranging across the land in search of the LORD’s word, showing how the same motion can express searching.

שָׁלֵם

shalem

GROWS FROM

שׁלם

To be whole, complete, or intact.

The heart described here is whole in its orientation toward the LORD, not flawless in every respect. The root also carries the sense of making good or completing, so “perfect” holds integrity and wholeness rather than an unreachable standard.

ALSO GROWS

shalom: Wholeness, well-being.

שָׁלוֹם

The heart’s completeness belongs to the same root family as wholeness itself; the verse describes an integrated relationship.

shillem: To repay or make good what is due.

שִׁלֵּם

This branch connects wholeness with making something complete, deepening “perfect” beyond the idea of flawlessness.

לְהִתְחַזֵּק

lehitḥazzēq

GROWS FROM

חזק

To be strong, become firm, or strengthen.

“take firm hold” in this verse is lehitḥazzēq. The Hebrew verb carries the sense of acting strongly or strengthening himself; the KJV’s “shew himself strong” preserves that active force. Divine strength is directed toward the heart that is whole toward him.

ALSO GROWS

chazaq: To be strong, become firm, or prevail.

חָזַק

The same root names strength as becoming firm, so the verse presents more than God’s visibility: it presents strength brought to bear.

Hezekiah: YHWH strengthens.

חִזְקִיָּהוּ

The name carries the same strength-root and makes the source explicit: strength comes from the LORD.

The LORD’s sight ranges across the world, attentive to human hearts and deeds.

The eyes of the LORD are in every place, watching the harm and the good.
Proverbs 15:3 · SDVThe LORD’s gaze reaches every place and sees both good and evil, extending the worldwide sweep of this verse.
For the eyes of the LORD are upon the aligned, and his ears are open to their pleading; but the face of the LORD is against those who do evil.
1 Peter 3:12 · SDVThe verse links the LORD’s attentive sight with response to those who turn toward him and those who do evil.
And they shall stagger from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and they shall not find it.
Amos 8:12 · SDV

Amos uses the same ⁨שׁוּט⁩ (shut, roam to and fro) root for people crossing the land in search of the LORD’s word. Here it is the LORD’s eyes that range the earth, and their movement ends in strength for the heart that is whole toward him.
