This verse in the King James

King James wording
This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you entering on the sabbath, of the priests and of the Levites, shall be porters of the doors;

The “porters” are ⁨שֹׁמְרֵי הַסִּפִּים⁩ (shomrei hasippim, keepers of the thresholds): the sacred space is held by attention at its edges.

The verse meets you at a threshold: what is set apart is held through watchful attention at its entry. Its keeping is shared and assigned, a visible watch carried by priests and Levites in the Sabbath rotation.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the idea that what is sacred is automatically secure; this threshold is intentionally watched.

שֹׁמְרֵי

shomrei

GROWS FROM

שׁמר

sh-m-r

To keep, guard, or watch over.

“keepers of the thresholds” in this verse is shomrei. The Hebrew names these porters as keepers: their work is watchfulness at the threshold. The same root can describe a guard’s duty or a watchman’s keeping, so the role holds both attentive presence and protection.

ALSO GROWS

shomer: Keeper or watchman.

שֹׁמֵר

The threshold keepers belong to the same word family as a watchman: their task is to stay attentive at the boundary.

mishmeret: Guard duty, charge, or watch.

מִשְׁמֶרֶת

This branch frames their place at the doors as an entrusted watch, part of the keeping of the set-apart space.

What is entrusted is preserved by watchfulness at its vulnerable boundaries.

And the LORD God took Adam and set him down in the garden of Eden, to serve it and to guard it.
Genesis 2:15 · SDVThe garden is entrusted to human keeping, using the same Hebrew root ⁨שׁמר⁩ (sh-m-r, keep or guard) that names the threshold watch here.
The LORD watches over your going out and your coming in, from now and to the ages.
Psalm 121:8 · SDVThe same root describes the LORD keeping a person’s passage in both directions.
For the Son of Man is like a man journeying far from home, who let go of his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to stay awake.
Mark 13:34 · SDVThe porter is explicitly assigned to watch, making attentive care at the entrance part of the household’s order.
The LORD watches over your going out and your coming in, from now and to the ages.
Psalm 121:8 · SDV

The verb translated “preserve” is ⁨שָׁמַר⁩ (shamar, keep or watch), the same root as the threshold keepers here. The temple entrance’s watch opens into a keeping that covers your going out and coming in.
