King James wording
King James Version
And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?THE KEY
The king’s “required” is an act of seeking, and the collection is a share lifted and carried: sacred instruction becomes real through what actually arrives.
THE MEANING
A shared responsibility can stall in the distance between what is commanded and what actually arrives. This verse puts that gap into a pointed question: why has no one sought the entrusted share from those charged to bring it? The place of testimony depends on provision being carried into it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that a sacred purpose sustains itself once its instruction has been given; the entrusted provision still has to be sought and brought.
THE ROOT
דָּרַשְׁתָּ
dārashtā
GROWS FROM
דרשׁ
To seek, inquire, or pursue.
“sought out” in this verse is dārashtā. The king’s “require” is a verb of seeking after: the question is whether anyone actively pursues the entrusted contribution until it appears. The word places accountability in that search, not only in the existence of a command.
ALSO GROWS
dōrēsh: One who seeks or inquires.
דּוֹרֵשׁ
The one who “requires” is, at the root level, someone who seeks after what is entrusted.
midrāsh: Inquiry or exposition.
מִדְרָשׁ
This related word carries seeking into sustained examination, echoing the active attention behind the king’s question.
מַשְׂאַת
maśʾat
GROWS FROM
נשׂא
To lift, carry, or bear.
This noun belongs to the lift-and-bear family: the collection is a contribution lifted up and a share carried. English presents an amount gathered; the root also holds the weight the community bears as it brings provision toward its purpose.
ALSO GROWS
nāśāʾ: To lift, carry, or bear.
נָשָׂא
The root makes the collection a carried share, joining what is gathered to the act of bearing it.
maśśāʾ: A burden, load, or oracle.
מַשָּׂא
This branch keeps the weight of the contribution in view: provision for the tabernacle is also something borne.
THE PATTERN
A shared work is sustained when its provision is deliberately gathered and carried to the place it serves.
And they came, every one whose heart lifted him, and every one whom his breath made free-hearted, and they brought the LORD's lifted offering for the work of the tent of meeting, and for all its serving, and for the set-apart garments. For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the lifted offering of the grain, of the new wine, and of the oil, to the chambers, where are the vessels of the set-apart place, and the priests who serve, and the gatekeepers, and the singers; and we will not let go of the house of our God.On the first day of the week, let each of you lay something by at his own side, storing it up, as his way has gone well for him, so that no gatherings are made when I come.THE THREAD
When you lift up the head of the children of Israel according to their counting, each man shall give a ransom for his living soul to the LORD when you count them, so that no striking falls among them when you count them. The Hebrew behind “takest the sum” is from נשׂא (nāśāʾ), the same root that gives this verse’s “collection” the sense of lifting or carrying. In Exodus, counting the people leads to each person’s contribution, making the provision a share borne person by person.
