This verse in the King James

King James wording
Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel?

Hebrew calls the “acts” “matters” or “words,” revealing how what is done becomes an account that can be carried forward.

Your life is larger than the line currently in view: what you do becomes matter that can be named and carried into a record. The word “rest” leaves room for what remains beyond this telling, and the verse says that remainder is written. No single visible account holds the whole span.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The part of my story that is visible now is the whole truth of my life.

דִּבְרֵי

divrei

GROWS FROM

ד־ב־ר

Speak or utter; the related noun ⁨דָּבָר⁩ (dābār) means word, matter, or thing.

The Hebrew word rendered “acts” is literally “matters” or “words.” What is done can be carried as a matter to be spoken and recorded, so a deed is already part of the account it leaves.

ALSO GROWS

dābār: Word, matter, or thing

דָּבָר

This noun is the singular form behind divrei; the “acts” are framed as matters that can be recounted.

dibbēr: Spoke or uttered

דִּבֵּר

The same root names speaking, linking what is done with what can be spoken and remembered.

יֶתֶר

yeter

GROWS FROM

יתר

Remain, be left over, or exceed.

Here “rest” is the portion remaining beyond this telling. The same root forms a word for surplus or gain, so the remainder can be heard as what still extends beyond the line in view.

ALSO GROWS

yeter: Remainder; what remains

יֶתֶר

This is the word used for the acts not recounted in the present line.

yitrôn: Surplus, advantage, or gain

יִתְרוֹן

This related word echoes the sense of something extending beyond what is already accounted for.

כְּתוּבִים

ketuvim

GROWS FROM

כתב

Write or inscribe.

The verse says the remaining matters are written in another book. The written record is where the visible telling sends you when it reaches its edge.

ALSO GROWS

kātav: Write or inscribe

כָּתַב

Writing is the action that preserves the deeds beyond the line currently being read.

miktāv: Letter or written message

מִכְתָּב

A written message carries what is recorded beyond its moment of inscription, as this verse’s book carries the remaining account.

A record can preserve real deeds while admitting that a life’s fullness extends beyond the line in view.

And the rest of the words of Solomon, all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the words of Solomon?
1 Kings 11:41 · SDVLike this verse, it names the remainder of a ruler’s deeds and points to a written account beyond the present line.
And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which, if they were written down one by one, I suppose that even the ordered world itself could not make room for the books that would be written. Amen.
John 21:25 · SDVIt extends the pattern by showing that even many written deeds cannot contain the fullness of a life.
And the rest of the words of Solomon, all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the words of Solomon?
1 Kings 11:41 · SDV

It repeats ⁨יֶתֶר דִּבְרֵי⁩ (yeter divrei, “the remainder of the matters or words”), rendered “the rest of the acts.” The shared wording frames deeds as matters carried into a record, not merely as an isolated list of events.
