King James wording
King James Version
Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the LORD they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.THE KEY
The Hebrew says Amaziah turns from being “after” the LORD, then men are sent “after” him, the same root flips who is following whom.
THE MEANING
The verse places two directions side by side: Amaziah turns from following the LORD, and men are sent after him. He reaches Lachish, but flight does not put him beyond their reach. The conspiracy and killing remain in full view, without the verse supplying the conspirators’ motive.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that escape itself guarantees safety: Amaziah reaches Lachish, yet his pursuers reach him there.
THE ROOT
מֵאַחֲרֵי
me’acharei
GROWS FROM
אחר
ʾ-ḥ-r
behind; after
“walking after” in this verse is me’acharei. The phrase translated “following the LORD” carries the sense of being behind the LORD. The same root appears again when men are sent “after him,” turning the change in relationship into a repeated word-picture of who is behind whom.
ALSO GROWS
acharav: after him
אַחֲרָיו
This form appears in the verse’s pursuit, echoing the “after” in “following the LORD.”
acharit: latter end; what comes after
אַחֲרִית
The root joins the idea of following behind with what comes later, shades English renders as separate concepts.
קֶשֶׁר
qesher
GROWS FROM
קשר
q-sh-r
to tie or bind together
“bound themselves together” in this verse is qesher. “Conspiracy” can sound like an abstract plan, but its Hebrew root carries the concrete image of binding people together. The plot against Amaziah is a joining of people around lethal intent.
ALSO GROWS
qashar: to tie, bind, or conspire
קָשַׁר
The verb reveals the physical image beneath the noun: conspirators bind themselves into a shared action.
qesher: a bond; a conspiracy
קֶשֶׁר
The word in the verse names both the bond and the plot formed against Amaziah.
וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ
vayyishlechu
GROWS FROM
שלח
sh-l-ḥ
to send out; to release or let go
The pursuers are sent after the man who has fled. The root also carries the sense of release or letting go, while here it describes a dispatch that tightens the pursuit.
ALSO GROWS
Shiloach: sent forth; the name of the waters of Shiloah
שִׁלֹחַ
The name preserves the root’s sense of something sent out, giving “sent” a wider reach than dispatch alone.
shulchan: table; provision spread out
שֻׁלְחָן
This branch carries the root’s extending or spreading sense, showing how sending forth can also become provision laid out.
THE PATTERN
A conspiracy binds people into a shared plan that turns against one person.
And Baasha the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, bound together against him; and Baasha struck him at Gibbethon, which belonged to the Philistines; for Nadab and all Israel were pressing against Gibbethon. Then from that day forward they took counsel together to put him to death. When day came, certain of the Jews twisted themselves together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had lifted Paul out of the way.THE THREAD
And the Egyptians pursued after them, every horse and chariot of the Great House, and his horsemen, and all his army, and overtook them encamped by the sea, beside Pi-hahiroth, before Baal-zephon.Both verses use אחר (achar, after or behind) to make pursuit a visible direction: Amaziah turns from being after the LORD and men are sent after him; here the Egyptians pursue after Israel. The shared root links following and being pursued, while the outcomes differ.
