King James wording
King James Version
Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where the Lord appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.THE KEY
The house is built where the LORD has already appeared: the structure answers a presence it did not create.
THE MEANING
The house of the LORD takes shape where the LORD is already seen and where the ground is already prepared. Yerushalayim (יְרוּשָׁלַיִם, Yerushalayim, Jerusalem) carries the resonance of shalom (שָׁלוֹם, shalom, wholeness): the dwelling rises within a place of wholeness, in response to presence already there.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that God’s presence begins only after people build a sacred place dissolves here: the LORD appears before the house is built.
THE ROOT
נִרְאָה
nirʾah
GROWS FROM
ר־א־ה
r-ʾ-h
To see or perceive; in this form, to be seen or appear.
The Hebrew form means “was seen,” so the verse’s appearance is also an act of seeing. At Moriah, that same root carries the language of seeing to a need, linking the place where the LORD appears with provision.
ALSO GROWS
roʾeh: One who sees; a seer.
רֹאֶה
The appearance is part of a wider language of perception: what is present can be seen.
yirʾeh: He will see; in context, see to a need or provide.
יִרְאֶה
Genesis 22 uses this form in the name Jehovahjireh; the Moriah where the LORD is seen is also associated with the LORD seeing to what is needed.
יְרוּשָׁלַיִם
Yerushalayim
GROWS FROM
ש־ל־ם
sh-l-m
To be whole or complete; the root family carries the sense of wholeness.
“Jerusalem” in this verse is Yerushalayim. Yerushalayim echoes the sh-l-m family of wholeness. The verse places the LORD’s house in a name that carries this resonance, so the location itself deepens the image of dwelling within wholeness.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Wholeness, completeness, well-being.
שָׁלוֹם
This is the familiar wholeness carried in the city name’s resonance.
shalem: Whole, complete.
שָׁלֵם
The branch makes the city’s name sound like a place of restored completeness, fitting the house built there.
הֵכִין
hekin
GROWS FROM
כ־ו־ן
k-w-n
To be firm or established; in causative forms, to make ready or establish.
“set firm” in this verse is hekin. The word for preparing the place belongs to a root that also means making firm and establishing. What David makes ready becomes the stable ground on which the house takes shape.
ALSO GROWS
nakhon: Firm, established, ready.
נָכוֹן
Preparation here carries the sense of setting something on a firm footing.
mekhonah: A base or stand.
מְכוֹנָה
This branch evokes the prepared ground as a base for the house that is built upon it.
THE PATTERN
A dwelling for God takes shape where presence is already encountered and received.
And Abraham called the name of that place, Jehovah-jireh, the LORD will see, as it is said to this day, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be seen."And let them make me a set-apart place, that I may pitch my tent among them. And the word became flesh and pitched a tent among us, and we beheld his weight, the weight as of the only-born from the Father, full of favor and truth.THE THREAD
And Abraham called the name of that place, Jehovah-jireh, the LORD will see, as it is said to this day, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be seen."Both verses name Mount Moriah, and “appeared” comes from רָאָה (raʾah, to see), the root heard in יְהוָה יִרְאֶה (YHWH yirʾeh, the LORD sees or provides). The house rises on ground where seeing is already joined to the LORD’s provision.
